8th gen onward is the easy line in the sand. There are a few 7th gens that are supported too.

TPM is a requirement for all of MS's management and security technology. A trend that's accelerating not reversing.

A lack of TPM and proper CPU language support will become a full stop issue at some point, but it's also true that that day is not today.

But the fact of the matter is, if it's not supported it's not supported. Any professional use of unsupported platforms is inherently unethical.

In answer to your original question, if I were looking for a good value Windows 11 compatible business class computer I would shop at the Dell Refurbished store. Different from the ordinary outlet, these are off-lease systems, all business class, in decent shape with new keyboards and batteries. In general they are pretty high end and easy to maintain, and they frequently publish 40 and 50% off coupons. For example, right now they have a 40% off coupon on the Latitude 7390. The least expensive one I see is a 7th gen i5-8350u (Windows 11 compatible), 1920x1080 resolution, with a 512gb SSD and 8GB of easily upgradable RAM, for $215 after coupon.

I'm looking at only 15" and larger screens. I'm considering going back to a 17" screen as "I'm reaching a certain age" and I need a bit more screen real estate to allow for some slight magnification, and my partner, who's also in the market, needs that even more than I do.

I do appreciate the pointer.

Anything with a 5 in the second spot in the number sequence (5511, for example, which has a 50% off coupon this weekend) is a 15" laptop. Going to have a hard time finding a budget 17" business class machine. The coupons change all the time, as does the inventory. If there's a specific model you like the looks of, you can set up a deal alert.

Sadly, it's about 125 miles for me. If I were going to visit my sister in the Metro DC area there are two that I could visit, and if this process is slow, I may end up doing just that.

Yes, they do clearly state that many are in store only. But their inventory, as expected, in store as well as mail order can vary widely. And I've always been able to get something with the specs I want mail order at no cost differential than if I were going to a store.
