Apple iOS update retroactively BRICKS repaired iPhones after screen repair!

Well, Apple is at it again. Anybody that has replaced their screen with a non-Apple screen in the past, and upgrades their firmware... the previously working screen and phone will brick itself. Thanks Apple!

Not for the screen, I don't believe. Touch ID and the planned obsolescence "battery" updates come to mind. Before that it was mostly them denying defects (antennagate, bendgate, botched updates, etc). I could be fully wrong.

Obviously I don't want client devices bricked after repair so... I called my outsource guy to discuss it.

I'm not convinced. Instead of bricking phones repaired by third party, why not brick phones repaired by anyone and see if it works. If there is too much backlash, blame on a bug. Sounds like a solid plan.

so annoying, had one come back today after updating ios seriously thinking hard about my next smart phone, ive owned almost all iphones from the iphone 3g to the latest iphone x

All of the 3rd party pricing I’ve seen advertised here in New Zealand, for iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8 and 8 Plus, have all been more expensive than getting a genuine apple display.
And how do you know your iPhone is still going to be water resistant?
All the 3rd party screen replacements we’ve seen come through our store haven’t even had the adhesive replaced!
And why do you think they’re now coming to an authorised Apple service provider?
Because they're having issues with their display!

Maybe the nearest AASP or Apple store is hundreds of miles away? Maybe you need it done NOW and can't wait for a future appointment?

You ask the repairer. If you don't trust the repairer then there's bigger issues.

Yes and every computer I got after another another shop failed to fix something has not worked right. Your anecdotal sample is skewed by the simple fact that you wouldn't see a perfectly working and properly fixed third party repair job.

Ive seen loads of bone-headed bad work from Apple and AASPs too, but that doesn't mean they don't also fix tons of stuff properly. Humanity is not perfect and all businesses will have some inconsistencies.

It's funny how third party repairers mock how bad Apple and AASPs are, and vise-versa. Nobody stops to think that maybe both have their benefits and flaws when viewed as a whole.

AASP's as well as Apple Stores themselves are not immune to problems. Had my glass replaced at a local Apple Store several months ago and it's started separating from the case about a month ago.

I look at all smart phones now as complete throw away garbage. Part of the throw away society that we live in, but leave it to Apple to lead the way lol. I'm glad I haven't and won't support them in any way in the last 10 years or so. Pretty soon even guys as good as Louis won't be able to make any money repairing their products.

Maybe in new zealand, but iphone 8 parts are similar to iphone 7 parts. Trust me, it's not as much as a genuine apple display in the UK.

Thanks for that, prices are certainly still high here, even an iPhone 7 Plus display is still around $400.
And I know that none of the 3rd party repairers, at least not the ones locally to us, are replacing the adhesive or guaranteeing the water resistance is reinstated.
Apple price is $305 for iPhone 7 Plus or 8 Plus.
Another example of why using Apple is better:
A customer came in with an iPhone 6s that had a cracked display.
They also needed a new battery, as the original one was consumed. (Well over 500 cycles)
They were happy to pay for a display and battery replacement.
We sent their iPhone to the Apple service centre (as they are the only ones that can do display replacements in NZ) and they just replaced the whole device.
So in the end the customer only had to pay for a replacement display but got a whole replacement unit at no extra cost.

I don't know if you guys do any investing but have you noticed how much faith the market has in apple? Many ETFs have apple as their top holding and when apple recently announced that they would move from intel processors to their own processor intel stock actually dropped a little.

I must say, I use an iPhone because I like iOS much better than Android, but iPhones really are disposable. I own three iPhones, a 6s+, 7+, and 8+. The 6s+'s battery is pretty well shot. I want to make sure that I get a genuine Apple battery because I don't want some cheapo Chinese knockoff battery to burn my house down, but do you have any idea how difficult Apple makes it to have your phone serviced by them? I thought you could just walk into any Apple store and have it done in 10 minutes. It's a really simple procedure. I've done enough of them to know.

But no, Apple can't be bothered to have a few different types of batteries in stock so they have to order it. Then you have to go into the freaking mall of all places (the only Apple stores by me are all in the mall), drop it off, then pick it up again in a few days. I complained and the guy at the Apple store said they could do a "rush" job for me and if I wanted to walk around the mall for a bit it would be done in about 3.5 hours. 3.5 hours??? I don't even want to spend 3.5 MINUTES in the freaking mall!

Then of course, he suggested that I just buy a new iPhone. I'm not buying another f*cking iPhone. I can't tell the difference between my 6s+ and my 8+ other than the home buttons feel different (a real button vs. a vibrating indent). The only reason why I bought the 7 and the 8 was because I needed to expand my phone fleet, not because I needed an upgrade. I felt like a f*cking idiot in that Apple store, and that's exactly what Apple people are...idiots. They upgrade every time a new model comes out that's basically identical to the old model.

And the iPhone X with it's ridiculous notch and having to memorize gestures...talk about stupid. Though I admit, I might have actually liked the X if they made the home button really small near the bottom, wide and as thick as a toothpick, and if they just made the camera span the length of the phone so there's no stupid notch. Having more screen in a smaller footprint is a good idea, but not at the expense of the notch and not having a button.

I'm really at a loss here. I like iOS, but I don't like the direction they're taking with the hardware. Android sucks big time. Buying an Android phone today is like buying an eMachines in the 90's with all that bloatware and constant glitches and crashes. The only difference is, you can't remove the bloatware and you can't fix the fragmented app ecosystem that causes so many issues. You just have to live with it.
