Business License Problem!

OK, I have called the village of Bloomingdale (the city where I live), They told me that I don't need business license for home based business. I asked them about the business license from "the city of Chicago", only needed if I would have this business there in the city.

But, then I did more research and and I found that I need to: obtain an Assumed Name Certificate (I think it is DBA), publish my certificate in the newspaper and apply for business tax with the Internal Revenue Service. Now, I am not sure if I need to get this business license and pay $250 for it. I have to find out, It is so much of this crap!

Business licences are a big scam for the purpose of taxes, but you need one to get a tax id.

dominik.
legalzoom.com helped me take care of my first DBA here in Normal, IL a few years ago. they know all the rules for the municipalities (or they do the leg work to find out what is right)
the other options that people mentioned, finding a local accountant, consulting a lawyer or your local SBA also are good ideas.
Don't try to do this stuff the first time on your own.
If you mess it up you will pay more.

When I changed the structure of my business this past month, i consulted both a lawyer and a CPA in my BNI group to help me get it right for future growth.

Theres a reason why you fix computers and those guys handle legal and financial matters.

In California, I've got a DBA, Business License, Home Occupation Permit and State Licence with the Department of Consumer Affairs. Not to mention a Resale Permit. All adding up to just under $500 per year. :(

Not even mentioning insurance.
