Checking for updates slow

Just download/install KB3020369 and KB 3172605 (combined..takes under 5 minutes on a slow rig, under 2 minutes on a fast rig)....reboot, let it sniff for updates (around 5-15 minutes)....tons of updates will show up like normal, download/install, done.
Those 2 updates get rid of that painfully long "first check for updates" that seems like a takes a day or overnight lately.

Some rigs, depending on what level Windows is, suggest you stop the Windows Update service before running the downloads above.

Been doing it this way for months...works well. No more hours of wait. Just a couple of minutes at the most.
I just wanted to say that I tried this method on three computers yesterday and it worked as advertised.
Thank you!

I've been wanking around with this as well. Dusted off a W7 Home Prem machine that has not been on since 11/2014. Of course updates hang. One suggestion by @River Valley Computer in this thread - https://www.technibble.com/forums/threads/windows-7-updates.69654/#post-546604 - has proved invaluable. Make sure the computer is not connected to the Internet and the downloaded installations run much quicker.

Edit: The below are the kb's I installed and their order. After the last one Update started behaving normally. Another problem I had was, for some reason, when searching and downloading I was getting pointed to the x86 instead of x64 files. Maybe because the box is a bottom dollar Lenovo.

kb2775511
kb3020369
kb3138612
kb3172605

I think you've posted this elsewhere Mark and it has worked great for me on machines that were not new installs but still stuck on Windows 7 Updates. What I didn't realize is that the first update (KB2775511) seems to make a (log/index?) file in the same directory as it is in. Since I ran this update from a USB Flash drive on one machine it failed on the next machine and I am assuming it's because I didn't delete that file first. (Work in progress. Trying to reboot - Stuck at "Preparing to configure.....pfffft")

Anyone else seen this on KB2775511? .... hmmmm - not log/index file. It's an executable that runs with the update. Strange - first I've seen. Now I have to figure out why KB2775511 is hanging. (Put down the coffee - back away from the keyboard....)

Interesting. Personally I always copy any files I am running to the local hard drive rather than running them directly from a storage device. For just the reason you mentioned. I've had too many times when some app tags the device it's stored on and causes problems in future attempts. So it's just force of habit to copy them over so I've never bothered looking for logs unless I have a problem.

I can confirm this worked very well for me also. Thank you, saved me tons of time and I will be doing this from now on.

I have also came across this issue with fresh installs of windows 7 pro. I have solved the issue by installing the following updates and for safe measure booting between them.

Download and install the following 2 updates:

1. KB3102810
2. KB3112343

No special procedure, After they are installed you should be able to check for updates and it should complete within a few minutes.

Without making me go look these up. what specifically are they?

Hi Altster,

I tried looking them up but true to form, MS isnt very helpful on what they actually do. KB3102810 is basically an update that fixes some issues with svchost.exe

KB3112343 is a hotfix for the WSUS as far as I can tell.

I tested them both on a clean install of winders 7 64 bit that had the updates issues. Then installed these updates and it only took just a few minutes (enough time to brew a pot of coffee) for the updates to appear. I had 210 to install. Installation took at most a few hours and it was done.

Perhaps others can provide more info on the updates and what they actually do. All I can say is that with these two updates this has become a non issue now and I consider it totally solved.

Have a good one!

I've had a laptop running since 11.00am last Friday. Its now 10.00pm Sunday and still no updates.
Tried all of the suggestions from these forums, nada!
Just kicked off WSUS Offline so hopefully that will work, need it out tomorrow...

Did you "Stop" the Windows Update service before installing the 2x KB's I've mentioned? We still only install the 369 and 605 KB's...and that's it.

Out of curiousity have you rebooted the computer between tries (for updates)?

If so and it is still acting up, then I'd do a wipe / reload (again) and after the O/S is installed and you verify that it is running SP1, then follow these directions (to the "T"):

(taken from a message up above and slightly modified by me)

1. Install Win 7 with SP1
--- disconnect your internet connection then,
2. Install April 2015 Service Stack KB3020369
3. Install Rollup KB3125574
4. Install WSUS update KB3138612
5. Install IE11 <---- (This is the full install for offline)
--- reconnect your internet connection and,
6. Setup Microsoft Update
7. Run Microsoft Update

Seriously, unless you have a flaky internet connection or are using some weird W7 install media, then this should do the trick for you and hopefully not take much more than 2 - 3 hours (this includes updates.) Whatever you do, stay away from the October Rollup. There have been too many people reporting issues after installing it.

Good luck with all of this and I hope something helps you soon.

Follow the link I posted upthread. I've had a couple where I had to do ALL the steps to get it working. Never on new installs just stuff that hit the bench that wasn't working anymore.

Thanks guys, @YeOldeStonecat @nlinecomputers @Altster yes to all the above, multiple times, still could not get the updates to go.
Followed ALL above (and other suggestions from the internet) implicitly, still wouldn't work.
Now Monday morning and WSUS Offline has been running all night.
Just kicked off the install client. Seems to be going ok now.

Edit: This was a fresh install of Win 7 Home. Dell laptop, HDD died, new SSD, Fabs backup etc.
