Compaq 6910p Screen Replacement

If anyone has ever successfully changed the display on a Compaq 6910p I would appreciate some advice on how to get the darned thing out without ruining the case.

As you know, normally, a laptop screen is held in by a couple of brackets that come up from the hinges to the main case. On this computer, there is just one of those on the right side. On the left side, the screen is screwed directly into small anchors that are actually part of the lid case. There is no clearance to get a screwdriver, even an L-shaped one as far as I can tell, into the space between the screw head and the casing. On the outside of the lid case, above each of the screwheads, there are holes cut in the case that are covered with what looks like a thin membrane. It looks like to get at the screws, you need to break this membrane and you would have access, the trouble is that you are then going to have these ugly holes in the side of the lid case where the membranes used to be. It's the damndest thing I've ever seen.

I've downloaded the maintenance manual for this laptop and, interestingly it tells you how to disassemble every aspect of the machine accept how to get the display out of the lid.

If anyone has any experience replacing a screen with this construction, I would really appreciate your advice on how to proceed.

TIA.

Many times a part of one laptop is used on many other laptops. Its possible this 6910p has the same frame construction as many other Compaqs made at that time.

I would google stuff like "how replace compaq xxxx display" or similiar wording for models that fall around that number, like 6900 or 6000 or go to google images and enter "compaq 6900" or something like it and look for models that closely resemble your machine.

Its alot of work but I often will find another laptop, sometimes not even in the same number range with similiar design and then can figure out what I need to do.

I guess I am confused. The manual shows removing the hinges from the bottom cover of the laptop, then removing the lcd bezel. The LCD then is mounted on rails on the display back cover. At that point every angle of the hinges are accessible although I am not sure you would remove them unless they are broken. Not one of my favorites to work on but I have replaced a couple MBs and a LCD panel on it.

Sure, the manual shows you how to get the lid off in its entirety then it shows you how to remove the hinges. The problem is that even after you do that the LCD display is still screwed into the lid directly on the left side, there is no rail attached to the hinge or the display that you can swing-up and unscrew. I'm going to attach a photo to illustrate. If I'm missing something here, let me know.

Thanks for your help.

A lot of work indeed. That's a good idea and I have tried it but no luck so far. I was hoping there would be maybe a comparable HP-badged model but apparently not. The other problem here is this is a business computer so you don't have a lot of them in the hands of DIYers.

I am really not sure what you are talking about. I replaced the LCD screen on 6910p no problem. Lots of work? Yes! Hard? No. Don't remember if I had to take hinges off or not but it was no problem. Sorry I can't be of more help.

PS Compaq is HP and HP is Compaq.

PPS The membrane you are taking about is either a rubber plug or fabric tape. I don't remember if the replacement screen came with replacements but I know it wasn't an issue.

PPPS. There shouldn't be any rail on the hinges. If you remove the hinge cover and ton of other items you can remove the hinge from the bottom cover of laptop.

Those "membranes" are just cosmetic screw covers, used all over laptops to make 'em pretty. Use a pin and peel it off from the edge, then stick it to a piece of wax paper or even some adhesive tape (to the non-sticky side of the tape, I mean) you stick to your workbench so you can peel them off later and stick them back on. That should give you screwdriver access. If you work with clean hands they should be plenty sticky enough when you've finished reassembling it.

Bingo! Initially I thought these things were larger than the holes but it turns out they were just like the screw covers on the bezel. A pin was exactly the right tool.

Cheers.

Dude. You remove the little sticker cover first..................................
