Hi all,

I've got a client that wants to be able to convert a PDF file he has into an editable word document.

Any ideas on software? (Free would be best)

Some more details?

How did the PDF get created? Scanned in or something like Adobe? If it was created by a PDF editor you should be able to open the PDF in Reader or something similar and select all>copy then paste into word. Of course that does not preserve the formatting. Fine for a one off type situation with no concern about preserving formatting.

There is onlineocr.net which I have used a few times. It preserves some formatting properly but the free version only allows scanning one page. Registration is free but they have some kind of credit system. But, once registered, you can do a multipage PDF.

Looks like libre office may have an extension that allows you to do this. I haven't really used it or tried that yet but found it in google.

This is one of those, "it depends" as to what the best solution would be.

If they're going to be doing the job repeatedly, then investment in PDF software, such as Acrobat Professional would be the best way to tackle this. There's free stuff out there that natively works with PDF's where you can edit inside the software, Foxit and Cute Pdf are two that come to mind, although, I can't vouch for how well they work.

That said, if you're comfortable with it, I've got Acrobat and Word installed on my machine and if you want to email me the document I'll do the conversion and email it back to you.

If that works, send me a PM and I'll give you my email addy.

I just looked at a document I converted and going from Acrobat to Word does cause some loss of formatting. The more complex the document structure the more formatting it will probably lose.

Huge thanks guys. :)

The client is an Architect who's trying to retire. His client is a lawyer that keeps wanting changes.

It's a one time thing, unlikely to want it again.

altrenda - Unfortunately the file is just over 7MB

markverhyden - I believe it was created by Word but not certain.

SAG - I wondered how long it'd take for that to come if I posted it. :D

ohio_grad_06 - Thanks, will have a look.

mm201 - Many thanks! Will PM you if what I'm trying now doesn't work.

TechPJC - Just trying UniPDF now. :) I did try and install some crap though...
