CPU fan not working Latitude E6510

Not sure what the problem is fan never comes on
I updated bios to latest.
is there a way I can test the fan motor before I buy another fan.

Will it freely spin with your finger? Is it stuck?

Boot f12 and run diag on the fan if availiable.

Thanks, I did run a diag will do a longer test only did memory last time.
it was given to me have already fixed many other things, it will be a nice laptop when I get fan working
other people have messed with it missing screws.
I have it on a cooling mat

I am going to test fan with an old USB

The E6510 is like 10 years old. Those go in the dumpster here. How much could a replacement fan actually cost? $5? Just buy one if you really want to keep this dinosaur alive. But I wouldn't use it for anything important. It could die at any moment. The thing is OLD. Is it really a surprise that the fan gave out after 10 years? The probability that it's just a dead fan is like 99%.

Its I5 processor runs nicely with SSD what I like about it most it has illuminated keyboard and Bluetooth once you have had an illuminated keyboard there's no going back, I just like tinkering with things, it has another 5 years in it build solid, unlike today's rubbish.

I tested the fan and it works in rare instances you don't want something to work so it's not as easy as a fan replacement
I connected the black and red wired to a USB socket and it spun, I was reading there is a chip in the motor.
I think it gets the info when to spin from M/B.
M/B passed all diag's

I measured the voltage on the socket where fan plugs in on M/B it says 3.7 v thought it was 5 v but it is giving out a current and it would spin with lower voltage. people have messed with before maybe they bend plug or something
so pretty sure its fan despite running when jumpered to USB

I guess I could take power from another sourse on M/B and have it running all the time they usually do in any case
it's easy for you guy to say ordered another you might pay $5 shipping we pay $20 for a $7 fan same on eBay as Canada is classified as international despite costing no more than what it costs in the US to mail something to Canada.
eBay makes money not on the selling but on the shipping even eBay has realized this and is now doing shipping

I see what you mean a gazzilion of them on eBay $100 or less, in my opinion, it is worth fixing as I like the laptop also it has a good battery lasts over 2 hours that was the deciding factor. How many laptops do I have now that I don't need? nearly as many as I have guitars?

Could be the motherboard. That's what the last dead laptop fan I had turned out to be.

I can count on one hand the number of times a dead fan turned out to be the motherboard. I've had a "dead" hard drive be caused by a motherboard too - both the motherboards with a direct SATA connection and motherboards with those little cable connections that use an adapter for the hard drive. But when someone brings in a laptop with a dead fan or a dead hard drive, I don't ever suspect that the motherboard is the issue. It just doesn't happen. Sort of like dead CPU's. It's so rare that it's not even worth mentioning to the client as a possibility.

I multimetered the M/B fan socket and I got power
ordered a new fan but with snow will take a week or more.

I was going to say, I could get that fan for maybe $8 to $10... you covered your bases. At 3.7v, it should spin albeit maybe a bit slow.
