Custom build a few years old, motherboard refuses to boot.

I built my brother a decent computer a few years back (4 years )...

anyways, he got married and she touched the computer once...

Now all it does is sit on this, for literal days.... :


So I did that thing where you cut power until it does the "attempting system repair" thing, and still nothing but spinning for a couple more days...

tried changing the boot order as it has a:
SSD
HD
CD/DVD

Nope, direct booting does not work.

So I tried restoring bios to defaults.

Nope.

Tried flashing and updating the bios, said it was successful...

Still doesnt boot.

Brought in my Win10 install stick to just nuke and install a new, clean, Win10...

It just does the same damn spinning on the USB stick!?!?!?!?!?

Stop over thinking it. If it can not boot from a Windows Setup disk then you have a hardware failure of some sort. Start testing all the devices. Memory, video, Hard Drive, Power Supply.

Can you boot to Linux? How does it run.
Reseat processor.
CMOS reset

strip it back to basics. 1 stick of ram, no drives, onboard video. You should get a boot error at least. If not try the other stick of ram. Try a different, 3rd stick of ram, try a different PS, a different CPU if you have one. At that point, if still not working, it's time for a new board. If it does boot start adding things back one at a time until you hit the culprit.

Have you used a different USB Stick and download latest Win10 Release , sorry but simplest things can work wonders. Some dont like certain USB's.

As numerous ppl have suggested HAVE YOU TESTED HARD DRIVE..common issue for hdd failure

This is Troubleshooting 101. You really shouldn't have to ask about this case.

disconnect the hard drive and see if it allows you to boot with that usb stick.

edit: disconnect all drives then see if it boots from usb stick

I'm like 80% sure you have a failing HDD/SSD with the OS on it. I've seen these same symptoms before. I dont know why it stops you from booting from USB, but it happened to me on multiple occasions. Just unplug all storage devices, DVD drives, etc. Then try to boot from the USB and see if it works. If it does, plug one device back in at a time until you can't boot from usb anymore and you have your culprit.

I always though Outlook is what caused problems with your Magic 8 Ball.

Also try to repair or create a new bcd with the hdd connected to a bench machine. Fixed one like this for me.

it took me a few tries to get it to stop attempting anything and go into the troubleshooting menu.

Brought in my Win10 install stick to just nuke and install a new, clean, Win10...

It just does the same damn spinning on the USB stick!?!?!?!?!?

I bet it's not actually booting from the usb stick. it's still trying to boot from the ssd. Because of UEFI and it's so called secure boot thing it will refuse to boot from an external drive.

I advise you to persist with the "cut power during startup" thing until it gives you access to the trouble shooting menu then rollback to a restore point prior to the failure.

This points to a hardware failure. First thing to check is the power supply as I have seen this problem with a faulty power supply before. After that you need to go through the motions and start to test hardware. My rule of thumb in these situations is to test the power supply first followed by a hard drive and memory diagnostic. For hardware diagnostics I use Eurosoft PC Check which works very well and a separate power supply tester.
