I have never listened to this woman until about 2 months ago. She is on the radio when I drive to and from my job once a week so I have the "pleasure" of hearing her tout herself as a "digital Goddess". I haven't listened to her program for more than 10-15 mins at a time so I don't have a a deep understanding of what she stands for or her technical expertise but from what I hear she is a corporate shill that pushes the newest products on the market. Unfortunately this is what we get and is to be expected when advertisers are paying the bills for the show.

Example, Carbonite and Mozy. She tells people that this is the absolute perfect way to make sure "your" files are safe and secure and that nothing can ever go wrong. Well she neglects to mention the hundreds of complaints on the interenet where people have had all their data lost or corrupted by either service or the fact that Carbonite lost over 10,000 people data in one fell swoop! She just keeps plugging away and telling people it is a safe and secure method of backing up your data and it is the most "logical" way (which is an outright lie).

I have a relative who had 10 years of data lost by carbonite which meant losing pictures of his son growing up from 3-13 and all his business records from his sole prop for 10 years. They were mean and nasty when he said that it was their fault and they kept hanging up on him while he was trying to get a refund from his 5 year contract. I don't hear any stories like that on her show but there are a lot out there!

I guess she does do a good job of giving the general public what it wants/needs. It really isn't for advanced techie people it is more for the average person who needs some help keeping up with technology. So there is a HUGE market for this/her but the problem is that much of what she talks about is toned down because of the audience. I believe that she probably knows much more than what she talks about on air but has to limit herself, as most techs do, when discussing issues with laymen.

So, do you ever listen to her show? Do you find it helpful or do you get any good tips from it? Do you have a positive or negative opinion of her?

Back when I lived in Delray Beach, FL (5+ years ago) I've listened to her on the radio back to back with Bill O'Reilly. At the time my family were a republican only family, until we decided that we would always go for the person who we like most, rather than stick to a single party. We also make sure we don't "cancel" each other's votes by debating on who the family should vote for.

ANYWAY...

Yes, I have listened to her. Great radio voice, loved her stuff, and I kinda miss it too.

(P.S. I wasn't old enough to vote back then. So don't blame Bush on me ;))

I don't know if I'm showing my ignorance or you are but what does Kim Komando have to do with politics? All I know about her is that she has a talk show on the radio about computers and electronics. Does she have anything to do with politics? Are you thinking of Sarah Palin or something?

I first started listening to Kim Komando about five or so years ago. At the time, she dealt mainly with PC issues and was fairly good in her answers and advice.

Over time, she started to address non-PC items, such as cameras, home entertainment, etc. At the same time, her PC advice/comments became more generic and "fluffy".

Now, although I'm not sure she's become a corporate "shill", she's definitely not the PC person she once was. Their corporate direction is now solidly revenue-based and not really technical at all (her store sells coffee makers and clocks!).

She used to be a good source of technical information for the average user. I'm sad that's no longer the case.

Nothing at all. Her show was on back to back with O'Reilly's show in Delray Beach, FL back in the day.

Probably like 5 years ago or so, not anytime recent. I don't even know when/if she is on the air here anymore. I will agree with glricht's opinion of the show.

I listen to a fair amount of talk radio on a daily basis. Not necessarily Kim Commando, but I have listened to her a couple times. I think you need to differentiate between the show and the commercial, because every talk radio host will go right into a commercial like its part of the show topic to make people think they love and use these products. I think about every talk show host I listen to that has nothing to do with technology is doing a Carbonite plug every other advertisement so that's no surpirse. But essentially she like many other talk show hosts is whoring out to these corporate sponsors. If you could ever get their "real" opinion on what they are promoting, it may be much different.

like others have said, she was pretty good till she had to start shilling for various products.

She's a holdover from the various computer magazines back in the day. By the time she talks about something any tech oriented person has already heard of it or has a better solution.

I don't listen, she kind of annoys me with with info. Sometimes she wont fully answer a question because she doesn't know the answer.

Given example is someone asked about a mini laptop, and instead of talking about the new Acers that had came out (at that time) for 3 months, she talked about the 14 inch and 12 inch screens some manus have. The call specifically said as small as possible, nothing fancy that she can use as needed on the go.

I live in Boca Raton, and have listened to the show. If I posted my true thoughts regarding the content of the "waste of air time" show, I'd probably get kicked off here. So I'll tone it down; In my opinion, her target audience is a 10yr old KID, who has mom's credit card to buy all the crap she tries to sell, (which is 80 percent of the show)~! I made a serious effort to listen to one show, and make a note of ALL the useful information one could extract from the show in one hour--I came up with about 10 min worth of spoken information, all the rest was JOKING AROUND, LAUGHING AT UNBELIEVABLY STUPID JOKES THAT MAYBE A 10YR OLD would understand, and (C O N S T A N T L Y playing recordings of people clapping their hands and saying WHOOOO, AND AAHHHHHH...... I was in my car, driving to the beach when I was listening, and it INFURIATED to think of how much IDIOT, DUMB WASTE OF TIME ON THE AIR was being broadcast over the air waves. I seriously can't believe she has a following.....and its SO MIND NUMBING DUMB, I am forced to believe the US Government has something to do with it...!!!

Choppie, you're going to want to avoid any of Leo Laporte's show then. I gave up on him for the same reasons -- a 1-hour show with 10 minutes of digestible info, and 10 mins of commercials and 40 minutes of banter.

Leo Laports shows are aimed at non technical people. I watched an episode of call for help back around 2005 or so before techtv was bought out by G4.

To a non technical person, it's not a bad show.

I don't tune in. Kim Komando is like the radio version of PC Magazine: 5% useful information buried in 95% irrelevancies.

As for TWiT shows, I do listen to Windows Weekly on occasion. FLOSS Weekly (which doesn't involve Leo) is great, and I listen regularly.

Like everyone else has said... Used to years ago, but I find it too "commercial" anymore.

I used to always put the radio in my store on her show, her show would run for three hours and people would come in and be listening to her and then ask me questions about what she was talking about and ask if I could do that for them so I guess I got more business because I had her show on.

What gets me about the show is they act like each call is a live call, but I guess they need lead in calls for whatever products they are advertising.

Good call Xander, however, I have to admit, I'm busted...haha. I absolutely cant miss some of the Twit shows;

FLOSS Weekly (my favorite when their blabbing about stuff Leo is clueless about and he is "dormant" during the show)

Windows Weekly (always picking up good stuff, and kinda keeps me informed of stuff I "don't have time" to read about but should know on some level) ALSO...Paul, with his dry humor....is a SCREAM....

SecurityNow (I know, some people don't care for Gibson, but I do enjoy the show, and do learn a lot from it, and its awesome that Leo SEZ about 20 words the whole show) One of the frequent topics is cloud storage and that TNO they talk about, (trust no one) with regards to encrypting your data locally prior to upload and you hold the keys locally, no 3rd party has any means of access to your data.

This Week In Enterprise Tech (This a a relatively new show and although the host is a little wacky at times, when they do get to the meat of the show, there is really useful information; about two weeks ago they were talking about SSD and the improvements with their controllers, and the difference between the enterprise SSDs and consumer--I diffidently enjoyed that show!)

This Week In Law (If I'm totally board and my mind is having an information craving, I see what's up in the archives of that show.)

Anyways, its 0730 EST, have to think about doing some work here at the office....

Cheers,

...C

I remember listening to Kim Komando in 2000 on radio. I really was intrigued by her knowledge (and also her 'sexy, low pitched voice) but as the show kept growing she started to become tooooo commercialized. But what she didn't know about computers, she sure made in for it in looks. She's a knock out if you visit her website.:D

It kind of reminds me of other talk shows that start out interesting but later turn into over dramatized junk - Dr. Phil for example.

So, I wonder what 13 years have done to her looks? Is she still using the same photos on her website?

I heard her on the air many, many years ago but I seldom listen to radio and I don't bother with TV... I hate commercials. If I have to 'watch' a commercial on Yahoo to get to the news story that I want to watch, I just hit the off button on my speakers.:D
