Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro - a must have tool for techs

For some badly damaged systems the app hangs trying to read registry then fails or simply becomes unresponsive. It sits at the black overlay trying to "read" registry. Perhaps a manual switch to activate manual mode in the event that attempted registry reads lock the app up.
I should try to load registry hives in another thread. If the process takes too long, the the registry loading thread would be terminated without freezing the program.

That would do the job. Good luck with that! You'll need a mutex or a WaitForSingleObject or something like that. Threads were never my strong point... Even the threads on my work pants are unraveling.

That is not my strong point either. I will use the Omnithread library for that. This should make the job easier.

Hi,
Fab's AutoBackup not copying web browser caches (especially Chrome, Chromium, Opera and Vivaldi since other browser have their caches outside the profile's dir) is now a reality. Also, registry hives are now loaded in another program thread.

Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro 6.9.0.30837 has just been released:

Added :- Most of the time useless, web browser caches are not copied by default. An option to copy these files has been added anyway.
- Option to backup only browser bookmarks and let everything else behind. This is useful if the browser has been infected with hijacked home page and malware extensions.

Removed :
- Apple Safari support since its Windows version has been discontinued for a while now.

Fixed :
- Sometimes, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird and PostBox profiles did not show up in the selection lists when backing up / transferring data.
- When creating a new user profile, it was possible to type characters like '\' or '/' in the user name text field. Then, errors occurred when restoring or transferring files to such mistyped user accounts.
- It was not possible anymore to create a new folder when selecting a new backup location (the "New folder" button was missing from the dialog box).
- The program could freeze when trying to load registry files from badly damaged hard drives. Now, registry loads are performed in another thread that ends on its own if the procedure exceeds 10 seconds. Then a default paths detection is invoked instead of reading the registry file.

About the Microsoft Edge export, there is still no go since they use a database instead of a flat file like other browsers, so, that is impossible to do when dealing with another user account or worse, a hooked hard drive.
Sorry @Porthos but I could not do anything with the tool you pointed me to. It looks like the only way to keep Edge favorites is to use a Microsoft account with sync enabled.

@fabs now that you've added the ability to just transfer the bookmarks and not the rest of the crap in the profiles, I'll buy your software. Hopefully one day you'll find out how to back up Edge favorites.

And both people using Edge as their main browser will be grateful.

It's probably less urgent than recovering MySpace credentials or migrating the Zune library.

You people seriously don't have clients using Edge? More people on Windows 10 use Edge than IE because IE is hidden and Edge is right there pinned to start. Microsoft is fully intent on killing IE and is pushing Edge with everything it's got. And unfortunately it's working. I mean, Edge is better than IE (barely), but FF and Chrome are much better.

Not if we can help it. Edge is handy as a thing to use if the main browser isn't up to scratch on a particular Web page (very rare indeed), but for reliability, compatibility, and general usability it's not in the same class as Chrome, Firefox or even Opera.

Most of our clients don't care which browser they're using because they all go straight to Google anyway, so why would we saddle them with a monstrosity like Edge?

Edited to add: After a bit of thought I'd go so far as to say that the vast majority of our clients who use Edge literally don't know which browser they're using. I suspect that this is widely true and that many people just click on "The Big E" out of habit and not because of any conscious choice. If "Edge" started with any other letter (or had a different icon) then nobody would use it. "E" is for "Internet", you see...

I had to release another update right now.
Not a big deal, this one is mostly for people running the program in other languages than English because of the lack of translation for new items.

There are some other changes anyway since I have been asked for empty folder handling on the Fab's AutoBackup tech support forum. They are now created at the end of the copy process, so, people will not complain anymore because of missing folders.

I also got an email with a screen shot attachment from a 12 inches screen laptop and a 2K resolution showing a screwed up interface and very tiny items. I had to set up the only computer I have with such a high resolution: Hello Boot Camp and Windows 10 on a 13 inches MacBook Retina! Weirdly, I had to remove DPI awareness from the program and it just appeared well (OK, a bit blurry but usable this time).

Here is the change log for version 6.9.1.30844:

Added :
- Empty folders handling.

Fixed :
- Program's interface items were displayed in a tiny size on machines with very high resolution screens (2K, 4K).
- New items from the previous update were not translated in the program's interface.

Any computer I work on has Edge removed from view! On new setups they get Opera, or if they specify Chrome or FF that's ok!
Older clients that want to keep familiarity and others that want IE get that.
I don't think I have one client that uses Edge!

Unfortunately too many of my clients do care what browser they are using. You can try and hide Internet Explorer but the only reason they will use chrome or edge is so that they can google how to use IE in windows 10 again.
