Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro - a must have tool for techs

We would be onboard as well.
We probably use the tool about once or twice a month, and every time I use it I find that is doing even more work for me.
Good!

Actually, what would save even more time is if you could scrape the list of company files that were in QuickBooks so we can remap them all!
All the Quickbooks realated features are developed blindly since I do not use it. Is this list stored somewhere in the registry or is it some kind of file on the hard drive?

I'm using Quickbooks Premier 2016, and the recently opened file list is part of the QBWUSER.INI file store here:

C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks 2016\QBWUSER.INI

which would distill down to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Intuit\Quickbooks 2016\QBWUSER.INI

The relevant bit is under an MRU section:

[MRUFILES_STANDARD_STRATUM]
FILE1=C:\Users\Username\PathToQBData\QuickBooks\CompanyName1.QBW
FILE2 =C:\Users\Username\PathToQBData\QuickBooks\CompanyName2.QBW
FILE3 = etc. etc.
FILE4 = etc. etc.

This last time I let "AutoBackup6Pro.exe" update itself I ended up with "AutoBackup6Pro.exe.old" and no AutoBackup executable at all. What'd I miss?

Obviously it could not download the new file.
You can try again by removing the .old from the AutoBackup6Pro.exe.old file name.

I'm running it from the old renamed file now. I found it strange as the other .exe files were there (translate, etc.). I thought I'd mention it.

HCHTech you rock! @fabs this looks like exactly what I mean. Often the actual file location will be somewhere not very safe, like, you know, the Recycle Bin or something. So that'll get moved... but the name of the CompanyFile.QBW would help out a bunch. Part of the issue though is that QB does not save the company file in this list until it opened for the first time. You need the password to open it. So maybe if fabs could generate the list of company files in a text document, and also add some information about the location of the QBWUSER.INI file in the top as a reference so we know where to go... that would be awesome!

One of the problems is that the location the data file is not standardized. It usually (but not always) starts out in:

c:\users\public\documents\intuit\companyfiles

but if the user sends the file to their accountant for quarter-end or year-end work, then they get it back with changes, the place where that new file ends up is completely unpredictable. I've seen folks run it from the email attachments location just because the accountant sent it back to them attached to an email. Most people don't have a good grasp on file organization, so you just can't predict where the thing will end up. I had one recently where the live data file was on a flash drive, plugged into a rear USB port, long forgotten of course.

It's gotten a little better with the new versions that allow you to upload the file to your accountant directly from within the program, and consequently, download their changes to your file directly from within the program. This keep the file where it was in the first place at least. The accountant has to participate in the program for this to work, so it's not universal. A step in the right direction, though.

A new Fab's AutoBackup update has just been released :

Version : 6.11.3.31363
Date : 11/14/2017
Changed/Fixed :
- In some cases, it was impossible to restore a backup to a new user profile created with Fab's AutoBackup. This was due to Windows not releasing the new user registry file fast enough. Now the program waits for this file to be loadable and not used by any other process.
- Sometimes, Nirsoft utilities WebBrowserPassView, NetPass and MailPassView were considered as missing files and the program prompted for an internet download, even if the files were already there.

Note: there is no Quickbooks improvement here. It is a bit tricky to do regarding the fact that many QuickBooks versions exist and worse, there can be more than one version installed on a single computer. This will be there, I just do not know when!

Quickbooks support might be the kind of thing you kick in as a version upgrade item, since there's been some discussion of how you can keep making money going forward and it sounds like it's going to involve some research and testing.

I've ran into an issue a few times in the last few weeks. It seems that sometimes (not always) Fabs is copying hidden office temp files. The ones that start with ~$. In one case there were close to 100. On the backup and restore they are no longer hidden yet they don't show in search so I have to manually find them and delete them. Running the latest version of Fabs 6.

edit: I can search for doc or docx and then sort to make it easier but they shouldn't have carried over.

That is not really an issue. If a file is there, it is copied. To not get these files copied, using the file exclusion feature would be a good workaround.

Been using your software for years and never seen this until a few weeks ago. the ~$ office files are temp auto saved files. they do not show (even with hidden files enabled) on the source disc but show up on the backup/restore

The next update will ignore these files without the need of using the files exclusions feature. If it finds a file with the name starting with '~$', it will check if it is hidden. If it is, the file is ignored. This should avoid such problem and will not have any impact on global performance.

You can get the update from your store's account (in the order's details) or using the notification link in the main program.

This might seem a bit trivial, however ...

Would it be possible to have an English language setting with dd/mm/yyyy date format, please – perhaps 'English International'? It would save a lot of mental juggling for English speakers outside the US.

Alternatively, expose the date/time format in the AutoBackup.ini file or the translatable strings, so we can do it ourselves.

Thanks for considering.

1st - Thanks for an amazing product.
I sort of liked transferring those (all) files. Then when a customer can't find something, I can show them why. Otherwise they don't understand anything, except I didn't copy their "file". Maybe I'm in the minority. If so, I'll work around it.
Thanks again.

That should not be really an issue since these files are hidden and cannot be used as this.
