Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Fabs Restore Question . . .

First, I'll admit I'm being lazy before digging in to documentation.

Yesterday I did a restore on to a machine that I thought I'd unlinked from OneDrive before having done so; I hadn't. When I unlinked it this morning some files had become "cloud only" so those are lost (kinda-sorta) if one does not want to use OneDrive, and this client doesn't.

Now that I have unlinked the device from OneDrive, is it possible to re-run a Fabs restore and have it gracefully ignore any files already present and just restore any that are no longer present locally?

I also backed things up by hand, too, so if push comes to shove I can use a straight Windows copy command, but if Fabs can be told to gracefully handle this situation where it would skip anything already present, I'd rather do that.
When listing files to copy, it compares what it has between source and destination. If a file with same size and dates, then it is automatically skipped

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.16.0.6729 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Added:
- Minecraft data
- Da Vinci Resolve projects
- mRemoteNG settings
- New check box to select and deselect all drivers in the list.
- Pro only: for a few users, grabbing data from a pulled drive can make it unbootable once plugged back in its original computer. To avoid this, a message warns user about that possible issue when selecting another system drive as source. This feature is recommended only if source drive is already unbootable or if it is going to be reformated.

Fixed:
- It was not possible to get computer's serial number when running Windows 11 24H2.
- Pro only: when defaults.ini file already existed, new items supported by the program were not added to it so it could be difficult to exclude them by default for next jobs.

Grab it from your orders history's details on the shop's website at https://archive.fpnet.fr/account.php (ordered before May 1st 2022) or https://store.fpnet.fr/en/order-history for newer orders. You can also use the bundled updater tool (click the "Download Fab's AutoBackup 7.X" link within the program and get the updated files).

Is there a reason the manuals fail to update?

Hum, looks like something is broken here.
Got it : newest online file names were like "Autobackup7Pro-Manual..." instead of "AutoBackup7Pro-Manual..." so files have not been overwrtitten on the server and checksums were not the ones expected by the updater.
It shoud work well now

Is this issue exclusive to the newer versions of Fabs? Is it an issue with later builds of Windows 11? Or has this always been an issue even on older versions of Fabs/Windows and I've just never been aware of it?

Apparently, this is pretty old. One of the first cases reported were in March 2021. I would say that maybe 3 or 4 other persons had similar issues until I released latest version. There's no proof that Fab's is the real (and only) culprit and I have never seen that myself. However, just in case Fab's can really cause that, it was the least I could do.

In preparation for replacing several W10 Pro with W11 Pro machines I bought the latest version of Fabs. We're doing these 2 at a time to spread out the expenses for the customer. Doing the first two machines I ran into a problem. I ran the installer and pointed the installation location to the root of C. That part worked just fine. When I launched Fabs to start the backup almost immediately errors started popping up on the screen but Fabs kept running. In the end a reboot is what allowed me to complete the backups to a network location. Running the restore on a new machine had no problems. I just find it odd. I've used Fabs over the years and never had that type of problem.

These are domain joined but I only do that to make it easy to map resources for the client machines. Just using Defender for antimalware. Wonder if anyone has had anything similar recently. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the dialogue boxes.

It would have been useful if you could provide some error messages

I wonder if it has anything to do with "fast startup" being turned on? I always turn that off and I've literally never seen this, and I've used Fabs literally thousands of times on drives in my dock. Maybe it's due to cheap knockoff enclosures/docks? I only use the best hardware, certified cables, etc. This is a weird problem but I'm glad to hear it's been happening since 2021 because statistically speaking based on how many times I've done this, it will probably never happen to me.

Please see attached. Had 3 machine this weekend. First two gave the error, third one didn't. Looks like the error starts when I type in the \ make the full path for backup since it's not showing up in the discovery by clicking on the folder.

Thanks for that. I'll try to see what it means

Edit:
I did not keep the file that can help me finding ou what it meant and I had to build another one based on archived sources. Then there may be something wrong with functions hexadecimal addresses. Based on this reconstruction, first error message would mean that it happened while processing fonts and the second while processing Internet explorer start page🤨.
Both procedures are triggered when the program is copying stuff. Here, that's not even the case since it pops up when setting up backup path using a backslash... That's a total nonsense.

Now, I need to know if this is blocking or not. What happens if you paste the entire path into the field ? Does it still error out ? If not, then I can try to silence any error message that could popup while typing into this field.
Thanks

Thanks @fabs. I did not try pasting the full path so I have no way of knowing if functioned. Earlier I was able to get in the second backslash but it appears that as long as you click in that field it generates the errors. I'll try removing Fabs, re-installing to see if it happens again. BTW I am installing it at root, aka C:. but did. not did not do the install using run as admin.

That's should not be an issue but it is definitely better to have it inside at least one sub folder. I mean like program's path should be something like C:\SomeFolder\AutoBackup7Pro.exe.
There is no need to run the "installer" as admin as well. It does not matter as it's just a file extractor and not a "real" installer.
Finally, you should probably use the program from a network location or some removable device so you will not have to extract the files and activate the product every time. Just extract the files to your removable device or network share, activate it and then always use it from there :)

Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.16.0.6797 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Added:
- Ability to set SSL SMTP settings to send backup reports by email. Also, system emails (error reports and debug feedbacks) are now sent through SSL secured connection.

Fixed:
- There was an issue sending error reports to developer by mail since this feature relied on a server currently unreachable because of a broken internet connection.

I did a Fab's (7.16.0.6797 Pro) transfer yesterday with Thunderbird profiles selected, but they weren't found during processing:

12/5/2024 9:35:34 PM : parso => Don : Mozilla Thunderbird Profile "default" ("D:\Users\parso\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\f0k4obv5.default") : No file to copy
12/5/2024 9:35:34 PM : parso => Don : Mozilla Thunderbird Profile "default-release" ("D:\Users\parso\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\zq9f4yj0.default-release") : No file to copy

I noticed in the on-screen messages that Thunderbird didn't copy so I went back in Fab's to make sure Thunderbird profiles were selected, de-selected everything else, and ran the transfer again. This time the Thunderbird profiles were found during processing:

12/5/2024 9:51:43 PM : Processing : parso (Associated Microsoft ID : oldfellow44@outlook.com) to Don
12/5/2024 9:51:43 PM : parso => Don : Mozilla Thunderbird Profile "default" ("D:\Users\parso\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\f0k4obv5.default") : 4 Files (*.*) - 512.54 KB
12/5/2024 9:51:49 PM : parso => Don : Mozilla Thunderbird Profile "default-release" ("D:\Users\parso\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\zq9f4yj0.default-release") : 541 Files (*.*) - 8.18 GB

And they were transferred OK. Why were the Thunderbird profiles not found on the first run?

No idea. I need to investigate
