So, I was going to find the thread about my recent hospital stay and update it but not feeling totally willing to go search for it I thought I would just start another.

The other day was another landmark day in my life. Nothing bad really. You see I have been paying a great deal more about my health than I ever have in my life. I have gone thru a lot of changes as one would expect after reaching the second half of ones life. I finally came up on my 3rd doctors visit to see how things are going. Before the visit I went in for a complete blood check.

So, I went into the doctors office and the first thing they do is have you step on the scales. This is my milestone. I weighed in at below 200 lbs !! I was 197 lbs. You see, Before I got sick I was 250 lbs and couldnt lose weight no matter what I did. Now, Its been 5 months since going into the hospital and I have dropped 53 lbs! For me thats incredible. What is even nicer is that my doctor took me totally off my high blood pressure meds. She said that I no longer need them. I have also had my Diabetes med (Metformin) cut in half.

My doctor said that I am an extremely lucky individual. The way I bounced back from a near death experience back around Christmas. For those that didnt catch my old thread, I went into the hospital with a blood sugar level of over 900, Extreme dehydration and as my doctor put it "Knocking on heavens door". The attending doctor that saw me when this all first started happening had commented to my doctor "I do not think this guy is going to make it " (My doctor was on vacation when I first went in for a checkup because I thought I had the flu or something back before Christmas. He set me up for some routine blood tests to see what was going on).

So, I guess everyone here has to put up with me a bit longer. :)

Congratulations! I'm on Metformin too and know that reducing my weight would help a lot, it's just a really tough thing to do. Glad you're on the right road!

Thank you very much for the reply.

I was just thinking - A lot of people might ask what it feels like to be over 900 sugar level. So, I can sum it up like this:

Your body is a hard drive. Its like you have bad bearings. It takes too long to reach the 7200 rpm speed and your throwing smart errors about this all over the place. Then you reach the point that you can not even get up to 7200 rpm that you need to function. Every effort to do anything is extremely hard. Its like a ten ton weight is on your shoulders and your vision blurs to such an extent that you can not even read large street signs.

:)

BG of 900? Holy cannoli!!! Can't even imagine. I recently started to get serious about my health as I'm on the wrong side of the half century mark and part of that is monitoring my BG with a meter kit I bought. I'm freaking out that it's at 160 at 2 hours after a meal.

At any rate that's a great success story. Now you just need to get your business to grow just as fast as your health has improved.

Perhaps an SSD to replace your 7200 rpm platter drive transplant?
Just kidding. I always try and find a bright side when something like this happens and a little humor, may help take the edge off.
Anyways, congrats on your recovery and it sounds like you are living a much better lifestyle.
Keep at it!

Congrats!!

It's crazy what we can accomplish when we are properly motivated.

I'm at the point now where I need to make a change. I've always been
a bigger guy, just not very tall. 5'10 so or and currently 330 pounds or so.

There is no getting around it, I am fat. I used to say things like, well I do
carry it very well or I haven't got any adverse health effects from it. I gave
that nonsense up a few years ago. I don't look like most people who weigh
300+ pounds, I have a lot of muscle and a broad structure but I am fat at
and I do worry that I'm going to start developing health care issues.

My blood pressure was always around 120/80 which I felt for my weight wasn't
terrible. Now it's closer to 140 ish over 90+ depending on the day. I'm not diabetic
either but I fear that is coming as well. I'm on the edge of where I feel I still have time
to make the necessary changes and avoid most of the major complications that come
with being 150 or so pounds over weight.

What would you say has made your journey effective, if you could sum it up ?

Health problems are no fun. Some of mine are similar to yours, some are not. They will change your perspective though. Congratulations on your weight loss and general improvement. Hope things continue to improve for you.

Happy to hear you're doing better Coffee, I need to lose about 30 lbs myself. Carrying this extra weight around isn't doing my body any good.

Yes, Gotta push the business more. I am planning to tare down my website and rebuild it. Probably turn the SEO over to someone that can do it more productively than me ( too many hats) and generally start pushing again. My business clients have kept me alive so far, so I am quite lucky there. :)

Thanks for the reply :)

Well, To be honest - Dying. Its something we all sit around and think about and go - YAH, ok... But when it becomes more of a possibility it scares you dead straight.

This is what I did to lose the weight. Also, Keep in mind that a lot of my problem of not being able to lose weight was a thyroid issue.

Anyways, Check this out and I bet you will lose weight:

I have 2 liquids that I can drink. Coffee and water. Thats it.

I have some foods that I will never eat again - pasta, pizza ect... corn, potato's, NO BREAD.

Eat all the meat and eggs you want. Chicken, ect... Eat lots of veggies! Just not corn. Make stuff - brocolli and cowaflower with seasoning steamed. Lots of steamed vegtables. Stuff like Chili is cool if you make it at home. Good for you.

I do not eat between meals and I do not eat til I feel full. I eat a balanced amount and thats it. I do not eat out. NO NO NO.

Its a rude diet. But it works. I will honestly say that eating like that you tend to not feel hungry much. The veggies and meats stick with you during the day. I am not starving. But things like corn and pasta have lots of carbs and that converts to sugars and that raises your blood sugar level.

NO MORE POP.

I bet if you do that and stick to it your going to lose a LARGE amount of weight right away. Then it will slow down but still drop over time.

Now, But the money that you save from not going to fast food and other places, The pop you would be drinking and such and save it up and spend it on something that really matters - Like a Cool server :)

When I started using the BG meter I was really surprised about how my body reacts to diet. Take breakfast. I usually eat something like yogurt with lots of dried fruits, prunes, raisins, etc. One of the measurements is what is the BG two hours after a meal compared to a fasting BG, no food for 8-10 hours. My fasting is mid 90's to mid 100's. My two hour with that has been around 160, a bit too high. I've had a couple of days with a plain cereal, Cheerio's and milk. That value has been around 120. Much better. I love eggs and that puts me into the same territory as the yogurt and dried fruit.

I found a site which had interesting information related to that.

But I do agree about the diet changes. Things we are so used to eating, even in a natural state, are not so great as you mentioned. I had a discussion with a customer a couple of years ago about this. Part of his solution was to avoid the white things, anything with milk, flour, etc. For me the worst part is I'm all over the place. So building a proper carry along diet has been a challenge.

This sounds exactly like the Always Hungry diet that I am fond of. Popular opinion is finally starting to come around to the idea that the evil isn't really fat--it's sugar (and simple carbs, to a certain extent). Getting off the blood sugar rollarcoaster was one of the best things I ever did. I just wish I had figured it out sooner.

Congrats on your health victory!

Interesting. I find that when I eat right - which I have been doing since last Christmas - I do not get hungry as much. I rather enjoy the meals I make and I have shed off over 50 lbs of weight. There really isnt anything about being always hungry. If I am hungry its around meal time now and I have a sensible meal and I am full.

I have come to the belief that most people eat wrong. This causes a lot of health issues and these issues do not show up until later in life. This gives people plenty of time to disagree with a healthy diet until they get older and figure it out that eating wrong was the source of a lot of their issues.

The title of the book has to do with how people feel BEFORE they starting eating the way you have discovered. Because your fat cells are essentially stealing nutrients from the rest of your body, so you feel semi-starved all the time...this is what leads to constant snacking and huge meals...and weight gain, brain fog, and blood sugar problems. When you eat the right things you don't feel always hungry.

When you eat the right things you don't feel always hungry.

This is how it was explained to me by my doctor:

When things start to fail in your body (specifically the change from food to energy and then the energy goes to the body to power it) certain things happen. One of the first is that the normal approach of energy (sugar) going to the various cells in your body greatly diminishes or just breaks down entirely. The cells in your body no longer get enough energy to perform their functions. Therefore where does this energy go? Well, Its stored in fat cells for later use. However, "Later Use" never arrives and it just builds up. Therefore, You begin to gain weight.

What I noticed when things went terribly wrong in my body:

I would be sitting on the couch watching TV and all of a sudden I would develop a extremely painful cramp either in the arch of my foot or in my leg.

I would go to Walmart and not be able to walk a short distance because I would quickly feel my leg muscles tire out like I had just ran a marathon.

I would plan out any chore no matter how small (take out the garbage) and envision attempting to do it in my mind. I just didnt have the energy to do it and wanted to think about the easiest way to accomplish the task.

I would go on a sleeping binge. When I worked full time for a company I would sleep the entire weekend. Still, I would feel extremely tired come monday morning.

My attitude changed and I became somewhat irritable and easily upset. I also could not concentrate on tasks.

These are all signs that your body is no longer getting the energy it needs to function correctly.

As per eating, I never felt hungry. Even when I skipped meals. Which I regularly did. I ate pizza and pastas alot and did a lot of fast food. My thinking wasnt "Iam hungry because I can feel it in my stomach" it was more like "Its noon, Now I can eat some more".

Now, As your body is storing energy it comes to a point that it cannot store anymore. So, Your body decides its going to just flush it out. This leads to dehydration. Since your cells can no longer take in enough energy then most of what you are drinking and eating is being flushed out. This takes liquids to do. So, You become dehydrated - EXTREMELY. Then after that your organs start to fail. Starting with your kidneys. Then you die.

You know, A lot of people reading this thread will blow it off. "Yah, Well thats you and your problems. I am 20/30 years old and do not have to worry" or "Well, My schedule demands that I eat out a lot". Well, Your body does not accept this even though you do. What I am trying to get across to everyone here is that you better change now before its too late.

No. Pizza.

I just can't wrap my head around that.

Very glad to hear you're on the highway to health though! Congrats on the great checkup and on realizing the fruits of your determination!
My wife, who is diabetic, follows this routine. She has recipes for Pizza, Ice Cream, Deserts, etc. All natural and low carbs. Did you know you can make "Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes" and can't tell the difference between the real one. Tested it on people and they can't. Strombolis, got it. French toast, got, Pancakes, got it. Loads of recipes using substitutes, right ingredients, etc., can make just about anything. Have had a few fails, but not many.
Eating healthy is not hard. Though I have found it to be more expensive than "pre-packaged, processed junk" that is made to "feed the masses".
