For those of you having issues with Win 7 Updates

What is making you guys run those extra 4 installs? I've yet to have just the 2 I mentioned fail me.

More offline installs on my USB drive means fewer downloaded installs once I check for updates. It's always quicker to do an offline install than to download one. Before I started doing this my "best case scenario" for reinstalling Windows 7, installing all the software I install, activating and doing all the updates was about 10 hours if everything worked perfectly the first time. My maximum fee is 2 hours. That's a whole lot of bench time I'm not getting paid for, and that was only the "best case". The norm was about a day and a half. The more I can install offline, the shorter that time becomes.

"10 hours of updates?" or "a day and a half?"

Are you kidding us? Haven't you read what others here have done to get past these long waiting times?

Using my integrated auto-unattended installer, which takes maybe 20 minutes on a fairly fast computer to complete, I am usually able to find updates to the O/S within 15 - 20 minutes after I have activated the product. Total time spent (including installing extra software titles - maybe 2 hours max. and that includes creating the recovery partition when all is said and done.

You need to be working on more than one unit at a time to help offset your billable times. If I have good hardware installed in the equipment (desktop or laptop) I can usually have 3 or more computers in process at one time. Just need to have more than one source USB stick and good networking / bandwidth to get it done!

Of course I hadn't. I have only been a member here for a few weeks. What I was doing before was installing Windows, installing drivers, installing other software I install and then just starting Windows Update and waiting. I would install SP1 manually if it wasn't already present. Before this I didn't frequent tech forums and I had always just accepted that this is the way it was. It was only now that the check times were getting so ludicrous that I even started searching for a solution.

I apologize for jumping down your throat. But the Internet is such a good (and sometimes horrid) place to get information on how to get around these problems. As are these forums. I almost always use the search feature here (and other places I visit) to try to find answers before I make any postings.

Of course all of this is a lot of trial and error, especially if you don't have someone to ask immediately.

Thanks - glad it is working for you. We have found that once in a while it doesn't work. What we do is this:

1. Run Tweakin.com (Windows Repair)http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html - clear all check boxes, check box for '17 - Repair Windows Updates".
2. Do the procedure in https://www.technibble.com/forums/posts/539826/ procedure.

By doing #1 one it has always worked.

Hey, no problems. It was actually a little stupid of me not to look up a solution before it became such a big issue. I repair computers all day long for a living, so you would think I would actually look up a solution to a problem like this. It just never occurred to me that I could do something about it before. So yeah, your surprise is understandable. But we can't think of everything all the time.
