Fortnite : FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe - Bad Image 0xc0000428 even with clean new drive

Totally forgot to ask. In the beginning did you try rolling back any recent updates? Maybe try with an older version like 21H1.
I didn't roll back any updates. It had run fine the day before, and I didn't see any updates installed (according to the history in Windows Update) in the last day or two.

I was actually on 21H1 when the problem started and updated to 21H2 in the process of troubleshooting.
Swap ram, test.
Swap PSU, test.

That will leave motherboard or CPU.
Don't have time to do this right now. But I got to thinking. One thing that is different about the one time it worked on my system. The PC had been powered down for a long time while I ran the old PC to test. When it began working magically after the old PC had proven to work, it ran and was OK that night. The next night it failed. I leave the PC on 24/7.

I just powered it off and will let it sit until I get back tonight and will try again with a cold system.

So the PC was powered off all day long. Turned it on and played a few games. No error. There was a small problem where the screen would go black for about a second ever so often. After I played a few I let it sit. The screen went off completely. It was still alive as I remoted in and could operate. Got it to return by unplugging the DP cable and maybe power cycling the monitor.

Over the life of this machine I've had a similar problem every now and then where the screen wouldn't wake up. I'd disconnect the DP cable from both ends, power cycle the monitor and it'd all come back. May have been happening with prior GPU as I recall. Never a big deal as it was always when getting started, and it was rare.

After that glitch early last night, I came back and played a bit and it never returned, the blanking or the original error message. Even today I fired up a quick game and it had no trouble again.

So does this screen blanking occur with the other graphics card as well? Screen blanking to me says you have a bad card. However, it can be dirty power from the PSU.

Power supplies are the number one item I replace, even in situations like this.

This is the only time I can ever recall the screen blanking during operation. In the past (and I’m pretty sure it was with the prior GPU) I’d have trouble getting the screen to come on, which was resolved by disconnecting DP cable on both ends and power cycle monitor.

This ^^
So many times I've seen weird errors that magically disappear after a PSU swap.
Maybe the video card is drawing more power than the PSU can deliver or maybe the PSU is just failing.

Played one game just fine around 6:30. Came back around 9:00 and the error was back. Since then I’ve tried:

Swapping power supply
Swapping GPU
Removing 1/2 the RAM
disabling NIC in BIOS and connecting via WiFi.

None of those things made a difference.

Epic games..support not as so.

Have you tried allowing the exe through your FW & AV - or disable both temp. It may be triggering a hypervigilant security issue on the .exe itself.

Found this on the Googles -

Solution..probably

The main thing is to ensure that your applications can access the files they need to run.

In the case of Fortnite, this means either reinstalling the game or changing the necessary files. The latter can be achieved by using a device within the system itself...

Delete the folder Fortnite «Binary files».

When you develop applications, the "binary" folder is the place where all the "working" files are stored.

For example, any "EXE" files that may be in your application are stored in this folder.

For Fortnite, deleting the "binary" folder means that you can load the "recovery" object into the Epic Games launcher, which should solve the problem you're facing:

  • Look in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Fortnite\FortniteGame
  • Select the folder «Binary»
  • Delete (press «Delete» on the keyboard)
Then restart the computer, and then return to the Fortnite site — download a new copy of the installer and run it.

    Download the Epic Games launcher.

The next step will be downloading "Epic Games Launcher"...
    • This can be done by clicking on the desktop and clicking on its icon.
    • In the «Start» menu, select the small «gear» icon next to the «Start» button (green).
    • In the menu that opens, select «Check».
    • This may take some time and basically fix all serious problems with Fortnite and its files.
    • When you're done, try pressing «Execute».
This should launch the game and allow you to launch it.

If it doesn't work after you do it, you will need to continue the reinstallation (which takes more time and takes up more space).

(If it doesn't work) We install the game

If the verification process does not work, you will need to reinstall the game.

For this you need to perform the following steps:
    • In Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > Install and Uninstall Programs.
    • In Windows 10, right-click «Start»> select «Applications and functions».
    • From the displayed lists (in both systems), go to Fortnite and delete it.
    • You can also remove Epic Games Launcher (if its icon appears)
Then restart the computer, and then return to the Fortnite site — download a new copy of the installer and run it.
This should remove files that are loaded when trying to download Fortnite.

Thanks @frase I'll give that a try. Unfortunately last night I saw your post but it was only the first sentence and nothing else came though, so I was scratching my head.

I did have some luck. I installed Windows 11 on a new SSD. Let all the default drivers get installed by Windows. Installed and ran Fortnite. Was warned by Fortnite that my video driver has known issues. I had version 456.71 and 511.79 was recommended. I went ahead and ran the game and it failed with the all too familiar error.

Then I installed the exact driver version they recommended, 511.79. IT WORKED!

Then I booted back to my normal Windows 10, ran game once to confirm error. Then clean installed 511.79. No love.

Don't know if going back to the new Windows 11 SSD install is still good as I'm struggling with the dual boot configuration on this Asus motherboard.

Progress…

First, I finally figured out why I was having trouble dual booting. I stuck the wrong SSD back in, do’h!!

So, repeated behavior that it works in Windows 11 with 511.79 Nvidia driver.

Boot back to regular Windows 10 install. Failed. Change rendering mode from Direct X 11 to Performance mode and it worked!!

Had to leave so haven’t tested further to confirm yet.

The grind continues. Returned home and tried Direct X 11 mode. It worked. (It wasn't supposed to as I thought changing from Direct X 11 to Performance mode was the answer)

Anyway, I do see one pattern. It seems to work every other day. First failure was on Saturday. Then it worked on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
