Gmail account on Outlook delay

A friend of mine has a gmail account that he uses through Outlook and has so for years. Recently there is a big delay with receiving email. Even if he manually sends/receives it sometimes still doesn't show up.
The emails show up fine on his iPhone.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Could be a few reasons, usually gmail overload. What is the folder size? OST size and gmail size? if they all don't add up, usually you need to backup the gmail in Outlook, then make a new profile. Get the calendar and contacts, tasks, etc before making the new profile.

and don't delete the old profile.

Maybe he has switched to New Outlook? In that version, all email from non-Microsoft accounts is first delivered to the Microsoft cloud before being processed and delivered to the client app. It's easy to imagine that could cause delays.
