Google wants to prevent ad blocking on Chrome

The article says nothing about adblockers being taken away. Instead, it quotes and ad block plugin developer that sounds like he won't update his code for new methods.

It's basically saying that the method used by some adblockers is proposed to be taken away. It also mentions that there are other methods, currently available, but they're more limited (per the article and above mentioned developer)...and that there is likely secondary methods that will be available after the change.

When Apple implemented essentially the same thing Google proposed in Safari (Content Blocking API) they were praised for it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There are certainly limitations with Safari's API like the list size limit I hope improve but the idea is sound. Safari on macOS still supports traditional extensions (for now) but many seek out Content Blocker extensions because they are so much faster. iOS only supports the new API.

It does mean that uBlock Origin wouldn't be able to work the same way, unfortunately, but I think the performance gains and closing the privacy hole are good goals. To be clear, I have no privacy concerns about uBlock Orgin and others specifically, but many extensions use the same hooks as uBlock to spy and phone that data home. The different method also means no more "Waiting for extension [blah]" when loading a page.

As much as it sucks for extensions to lose some capabilities, I think it happening for progress' sake isn't such a bad thing.
