Help with Black Screen of Death

Hey everyone I need some help with this one...I'm stumped.

What's happening:

PC boots up, goes passed the Vista scrolling bar thingy, mouse shows up and it functional, but nothing else loads, just a black screen and mouse. It even looks like the screen saver kicks on after 10 minutes. It almost looks like the desktop isn't loading.

Booting in Safe Mode has the exact same problem.

Vista repair utility shows nothing wrong, it also shows no restore points.

Ran chkdsk, virus and maleware...found nothing.

I tried the solution found in this thread: http://www.technibble.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4803&highlight=black+screen+death but the registry setting it says to change is already correct.

Does anyone have any possible solutions? I can't think of anything else to try.

EDIT: Last Known Good Configuration doesn't fix it either.

Roxio or MagicISO or other potentially responsible app recently installed? Can you open Task Manager then run commands from there? (Figure you can call appwiz.cpl if so and remove whatever app caused the issue, IF it was an app that was the cause).

I have one of these on the bench right now. It does the same thing in safe mode.

I resolved it by:
1) Use the vista DVD to go to the repair mode.
2) From the same screen where you do the system restore, there's an option to open an administrative command prompt.
3) That should open in X:\Sources or something like that
4) Go to the windows drive by entering C:
5) Now go to the windows event log folder on your machine (C:\Windows\System32\winevt):
cd c:\windows\system32\winevt
6) ren Logs Logs_bad
7) mkdir Logs
8)reboot

Tried and....no luck.

Have you tried booting a Dart 6.0 disk and rolling back some of the most recent updates? A few of the KOSD machines I have had were due to corrupt updates, once removed the system booted fine, reinstalled the updates and it was good.

Dart wouldn't happen to be free would it?????

It's Micro$oft so I'm guessing not. So no I haven't tried that yet.

It's not mine...it's a clients computer. She said she didn't do anything and that it just started a couple of days ago. Says she didn't install anything. She's probably in her 60's but seems to have some computer knowledge.

It's weird how far it actually boots...it just feels like it can be fixed but I've found online that has worked. Was hoping someone here had some experience with it.

can i ask something....? what did you do before that blank screen happened?

yes it happened to me...but it was an XP ...have you tried slaving the HD and scan?

Oh yeah. With everything I have...nothing found.

It really looks like it's just the login screen that doesn't load. I can see the screen saver run. I just can't do anything.

Well if I hit the Shift key 5 times it does bring up a window asking if I want to turn on Sticky Keys but the link for "Go to the Ease of Access Center to disable the keyboard shortcut" isn't there.

Frustrating.

Just gone through exactly the same thing tried all the fixes i could but to no avail ended up with a re install of vista,i gave the machine back and it was back on the bench within a week turned out it was a dodgy camera driver, when she went to install the camera software or plug the camera into it, it caused the BSOD.
Fixed it by installing camera software onto her xp machine she now uses that for her photo downloads and sends them to her vista machine for editing over the network.

i guess you're right...there's no solution as of now...just make sure that you'll inform the client that you have to reinstall vista...:D God bless...

It's stuff like this that sometimes makes me hate computers!!!

I fixed it and don't know how. I called the client and told what was going on, backed-up her files, and was booting the Vista install disc to reinstall the OS but I forgot to set the BIOS to boot from CD. So I was about to reboot and it happened...it brought up the log in screen. I logged in and everything seemed fine. I ran sfc /scannow and it found nothing. I'm speechless.

Now I just have to find why System Restore is not running. Maybe if I threaten to reinstall Vista that will start working again also.

lol! everything happens for a reason...but not absolute... just tell your client to be careful with the PC next time...because it's really possible that it will happen next time...:D..God bless...
