Sony Vaio SVE14122CXW.
If you check the picture you can see a separate wire that was attached to the video connector and im not sure what that supposed to do. Unfortunately was fragile and it came loose when i disconnected the video cable. The screen (LED) is broken but still lights up, well.. at least it did before that separate wire came loose. Now the screen is dim, has no back light anymore. I soldered that wire back but its still dim.
Before placing a an order on a new screen i wanted to know what is the purpose of that extra wire and if the wire is causing the screen to be dim ? Do i need to get new video cable as well ?
Any help/suggestions are much appreciated.

Id order a new harness, it looks like that wire is a ground?

It attached under that screw, so it looks like a ground to me.

got a new screen and new video cable but the image is still dim, i do get external image . can both screen that i have tried to be bad?

Can you clarify what we are seeing in that shot? What I mean is that the connector to the LCD or the motherboard ? Its rare to see a ground cable on the LCD side of the harness. If that's the motherboard end did you secure it back to where it belongs or is it just laying loose ? If that's on the LCD end did you secure it and make sure if it should be touching any metal foil that it is doing that now and that the foil is not broken off from the rest of the foil backing or surrounding ?

Can you give us the LCD cable code/id so I can google it to see what it looks like end to end ?

Thanks.

Hi, the screen can be damaged in the post, Where did you get the screen from?

You could of shorted something out on the motherboard, i have done this a few time's. Also like the Dell 1545 motherboard they have same sort of problem it's a chip on the motherboard that goes and you have to replace it to get it working again or replace the motherboard.

Are you sure this is a LED screen not a LCD screen with the inverter, If it was an LCD screen and dim i would suggest replace the inverter.

Keep us updated, :)

The black wire which it seems to be ground wire came off while removing the LED LP140WH2(TL)(E2). Purchased a new video cable Sony A-1888-519-A
CABLEASSY HK6 LCD(40PR1A) MEC and installed as its suppose to be without hanging or touching anything else besides its own location and the foil its not broken.
I haven't touched the motherboard at all when i tried the 2 new LED screens and the new video cable. Screen is still dim unfortunately.

I got the LED screens from LaptopScreen.com. Its a LED not LCD and theres no inverter. What chip is it that goes bad ?

You probably blew the fuse on the motherboard when you unplugged or plugged in the new screen. Sony systems seem to be especially prone to this for some reason.

It's usually right around the video connector, sometimes on the opposite side, marked F15 or F16 (or a similar F number). I know it's not really a great idea, but if you're just looking to test it and have nothing to lose, you can just bridge the solder points to see if the backlight comes back on. One of our bench machines is just using a gob of solder instead of the fuse and has been working fine for a couple of years. (don't judge me! :D )

Haha, no judging here.. Actually thanks for the suggestion. The bad part is that this laptop belongs to a customer :( . When i tested the screens i unplugged the battery and the ac power adapter as well, hmmm..
If i decide to do this i might need some guidance..do you have some screen shots that you can share ?

Did you reconnect the wire to its grounding point ?

YES i did. I would post a screen shot too but im not in the same location with the unit at the moment.

It could be a motherboard fault but I am actually more concerned if the LED portion of the LCD is getting ground. The 40 pin cable should be bringing ground to it by normal pin assignment but the fact it has what appears to be a ground strap I'm just not sure. I suppose you could try to set a voltmeter to continuity and then probe the motherboard or main chassis and then the electronics on the back of the LCD to see if you get a ground continuity, but I could just be fixating on that because you showed the ground being damaged and it could be nothing.

here is the picture with the ground wire connected at its original grounding point.

Do you have a meter you can set to check for continuity ? If so touch the head of that screw and then any metal part of the computer chassis (not LCD chassis/assembly) and see if you get a tone. BE SURE TO REMOVE ALL POWER FIRST, battery and A/C adapter.

Removed the battery and ac adapter. The continuity reading on the multimeter is 00.1 and i guess that means it's ok.
