How much ram can a PCG-9U1L hold?

Are you sure that is the right model number? They usually have another one like VGN.........

Pretty sure this is same as a PCG-K45 series in which case its 1GB max

cmiiw but I reckon you've got the wrong model no.
Look on the inside of the lid at the lower r-hand corner of the screen, it will usually start with VGN-something. The PCG numbers are to be found on the underside of the laptops and usually don't lead to much except other people who can't find the info they need because they're using the wrong model number.....

the PCG numbers that you find on the bottom dont' yield results, try the one on the lid. usually start with VGN like the other person says.
My bet is that if it takes DDR2 ram it will take 2x2GB = 4GB. If it is DDR1 it will take 2x1GB = 2GB, if it is DDR3 it will take 2x4GB = 8GB. This is probably not physical max but practical max due to prices per module

Interesting... maybe it's because I'm a member of the group, but my search also contained this thread!
When ever I need to know the amount or type of ram a specific computer/motherboard takes, I do a similar search. I would have expected that all techs would be doing the same thing.
I view our job as techs..., it is not to know all of the answers, but to be able to come up with the right answers, whether it be by searching via Google, watching YouTube videos, or from our own personal experience (to name a few).

Thank you to those with helpful info, and the part number i listed is the only Readable one on the laptop being pre-year 2000 these particular Sony Vaio's had the part number on the bottom of the chassis.
Thanks customer decided to give me the laptop to cover the cost of her backup. She's going to purchase a newer laptop through me.
