Solution: downloaded & activated using her Microsoft Account - could not use the product key alone as the original MS Account used with it is required too.

Customer has Word 2013. I had to install a hard drive in her PC and install Windows. Need to get Word 2013 back on. Followed directions in Word 2013 box to download it. Had to create a Microsoft Account and then enter the product key. Says key already in use. What to do? I need to get Word 2013 so I can install it using the key.

Just Word and not full Office? If so see above. I assume you have the actual key.

Yes, Word 2013 all by itself - not full Office. I am downloading what you posted.

Oh, I tried using that earlier and thought you could only do full Office, but I see now that you can choose any part of the Office suite.

Solved!

Pretty sure the key doesn't matter because she's already registered it to an email address when she bought it circa 2013, or someone registered her key to some email when they set it up for her. Chances are she doesn't know that email address, and if she does chances are she doesn't know the password for that email address, and chances are she no longer has access to that email address.

Your best bet is to sign her up for O365 personal at $70 per month and stop wasting your time.

So I'll go to install Word 2013 and it won't work because it requires the original account, which she definitely doesn't know?

WHAT THE FUDGE! All that should be needed is the product key. Unreal. Disgusting. Deplorable.

Can Office Home & Student 2019 be used on 5 devices like Microsoft 365 Personal can be? Looks like it cannot be.

If not, it'd be $150 to get Word. Looks like they no longer sell Word by itself.

Product keys are done.

When you buy a product key it's purpose is to give you the ability to register a subscription or a perpetual license. Either way it's tied to an email address.

You can probably stretch it. Technically Personal is only for ONE person and installing it on multiple computers that person doesn't own is a EULA violation (not like I care or anyone cares).

My guess is that H&S will let you install multiple times but then they will be stuck on 2019 and will not be updated to the newer versions of office since the license would be purchased outright.

One awful thing about this is that there's no way to find out what e-mail address was tied to the product key.

That's correct. You give up on it. Calling support is a waste of time.

I personally don't do perpetual licenses anymore I always recommend at a minimum recommend personal at $70 per year. This keeps the clients paying, keeps the email valid, keeps subscription emails coming to the email address registered etc.

When you buy perpetual like this client did, 7 years later when you want to reinstall you make it an absolute nightmare for your tech and then YOU feel bad about charging for the time it took to tell them it's not possible because you have nothing to show for it.

It's a waste of time for everyone involved. Sign her up for $70 a year.

If she can't afford it then install Openoffice, and find new clients.

Yep, all they need is one little line of text Activated by: abc@xyz.com

It's already there for 365 versions of Office, so it's not like there are any technical or security concerns. Microsoft just don't want to do it.

Office 2012 just left mainstream support, and is no longer supported on M365 services. So... as far as MS is concerned, replace it.

M365 is better anyway because Onedrive protects the users against cryptos. $70 for one person, $100 for SIX. It's rather hard to argue with.

Using the Word 2013 ISO, I attempted to activate the product using the product key.

The process involves (3) steps:
  1. Enter the product key
  2. Redeem online (sign into Microsoft Account) - proving what you guys said: key tied to account
  3. Finish activation
Her current email and one of her passwords worked to log her into her old and forgotten Microsoft Account and her Word 2013 was under Subscriptions & Services :)

On another note & small rant, she had a box for Microsoft Office Home & Business 2010. Says to go to Office.com/getkey to enter the 27 character PIN and retrieve a Product Key. Since that version of Office is no longer supported you can no longer retrieve a product key. Thanks, Micro$oft.
