how to reattach imac glass

We just got a call from a client letting us no the lcd panel fell off the systemn after we did a repair several months ago. I have not seen the damage yet, but would not be surprised if some connectors on the logic board and/or panel are damaged. This sounds like an expensive mistake. Our procedure is to clean the old adhesive off and replace it with 3M 9474LE (300LE) double sided adhesive cut off of sheets.2.8mils and 3.4mils thick. We attach the thinner glue to the mac and attach the screen to the thicker glue. We then just apply pressure with a pinch all the way around. Should we be heating this to get it to stick better? Any other suggestions to prevent this from happening again?

Something does not sound right. Those acrylic adhesives are very aggressive and intended for room temperature use. It is true that heating the surfaces, as well as the tape, improves initial adhesion. Heating causes the adhesive to flow better which provides more surface area contact. When I was a product manager for a pipeline coating company we used to spec that the tapes and pipe had to be heated to around 100F. Pinching should work but I've seen the Apple techs use a roller as well.

How was the old adhesive cleaned off and the surface prepped? One of the biggest reasons for large scale adhesion failure is poor surface prep.

At any rate you need to get the machine to look at it.

I prepped it well. My theory is maybe I got sidetracked and forgot to pinch it all the way around.

On a side note the glass cracked on the corner(it should not get worse and is out of the view) and it is about a $500 part. I offered the client to have us replace it or take $100. He sound like he may just keep the money. Let's hope.

He'll take the money now and when the crack gets bigger and becomes visible he will be back for a replacement at your cost.
