Anyone tried to upgrade the screen on a HP ProBook 470 G3 with 17.3" HD+ screen (1600 x 900)?

This is one of my personal laptops that lives at home, screen died on it. A spare 15.6" HD screen hooked up to it works fine, so I've confirmed the problem is the LCD panel.

The laptop is still fast enough for general use (i5-6200u, 8gb, SATA SSD) and the keyboard was just replaced recently. Looking for replacement panels I noticed some compatible screens listed with FHD and IPS, thought that would be a good upgrade so ordered one.

Unfortunately the FHD screen didn't work. Tried another and same problem. I'm thinking now the display cable must not be compatible with FHD.

Anyone had issues like this?

It isn't all-inclusive, but in my experience, upgrading screen resolutions is hit or miss - mostly miss. Either it's a "firmware" thing, a connector thing, or some other graphical weirdness. If the computer wasn't made for XXX resolution, or didn't have it as a purchase option for a larger res screen, it usually doesn't go well.

And be aware, if a i3 and i5 and i7 were offered in the "same model" - it does not indicate the motherboard is the same - so really, a different computer for all intents and purposes... perhaps only the i7 offered the upgraded screen, in which case only the i7 motherboard would be an option to upgrade (assuming it didn't come optioned with the larger screen in the first place).

Hope that made sense.

Looking at the service manual:

There is only one display cable listed in the service manual. 99% that should mean it is wired for 2 eDP lanes to support a 1080p display. Considering it comes with 1080p panel as an option and is listed in the service manual.
Edit: Saw in quickspecs that both 17.3 1600x900 and 1920x1080 panels are eDP 1.3 2 lane.

What screens did you order?

This is the part number for the 1080p panel: 827046-001.

Ok doing some more looking checking multiple i5 models of this laptop on partsurfer, they all seem to have a 1600x900 panel on models with AMD dedicated graphics with 1gb and a 1080p on the 2gb models.

What's the serial number or product and part number for this laptop?

The 470 G3 specs page shows two display options:
HD+ TN 220nits, with interface eDP 1.3 without PSR (2 lane)
FHD IPS 300nits, with interface eDP 1.3 (2 lane)

I'm not sure what PSR is but maybe the motherboard connector doesn't include all required contacts for FHD/IPS/300nits.

That product number was too generic it was showing all the parts but it looks like 4 different i5 motherboards. There could be something motherboard side. Both the screens in the QuickSpecs say w/o PSR but that shouldn't make a difference.

Do you have the panels actual part number (from the panel manufacturer not HP) of the original and one of your replacements? Should be something like LTN173....

I didn't get the official HP part (too expensive and very long ETA).
The LCD screen I got is: LTN173HL01 (Samsung)
