Looking at this on behalf of a friend. HP G62-102SA laptop, randomly displays a totally white screen. Can be immediately at the BIOS screen stage, or when booted to Windows. Sometimes goes for days without doing it, sometimes appears as soon as switched on.

Manipulation of the screen and lid does not appear to trigger anything. Output displays normally to external monitor, even when laptop screen is white.

Now this is one of those horror-design laptops with the two screen bezel screws located at the bottom two corners, meaning you have to more or less dismantle the entire laptop to get to the screen and cables. At this point, this is not something I'm prepared to do, as I just want to give my friend a rough estimate.

I'm thinking it could be the screen itself, loose or damaged screen cable, or worst case the mobo.

Anybody had this problem with similar HP laptops before? What was the cause?

Have you tried an external display?

If the problem is replicated on an external display, then I'd tend to think it's a GPU issue. But it could still be a cable issue. If it's not reproducible on an external display then I'd be pretty sure you have a bad screen.

I'd suggest checking the display cable first (remove it and reinstall it). Ran into one report of a guy that had to open and close the laptop up to 20 times before he got an image. Even if you have a good connection, there could be a break in the cable itself.

Well we finally dismantled this and re-seated the screen cable and it immediately starting working OK again, so fingers crossed it was just this. Too early to call it cured though as sometimes it went for days without giving the white screen.

My wife had the same laptop and we started getting the same white screen issue after I installed an Intel SSD. Most times it would be fine and sometimes it would white screen during boot or even just sitting at the Windows desktop.
Put the old slow spinner drive back in and problem went away.
We have since sold it for next to nothing. Really crappy laptop. Keyboard changed several times, forever cleaning it because it clogs up so easily and it still runs pretty warm even when cleaned and re-thermal pasted. The G60 CQ60, 61 etc are all the same.... crap.
