I am trying to repair a windows 7 64bit install and ran sfc on the drive and have this error:

Cannot repair member file [l:30{15}]"ieframe.dll.mui" of Microsoft-Windows-ieframe.Resources

I cannot seem to find this file anywhere. Anyone know where the location of this file is? I know ieframe.dll is in c:\windows\system32 but I cannot find any reference to ieframe.dll.mui

Thanks,

Another one of those "Post a problem and then all of a sudden the fix is found thing".

Its inside the language area (en-us) of c:\windows\system32 - Geez...

I have been trying to track down a problem after cloning a drive with bad sectors. Not a lot of bad sectors but apparently some files ended up corrupted. Windows 7 runs fine with no errors except one very specific problem is showing up with two programs. I get a blank dialog window when installing java or another program called PCLAW. Here is what I get when running the install of java and its basically the same after installing PCLAW and starting it:

I really do not want to N/P if I dont have to but its looking that way. SFC /SCANNOW found errors and couldnt fix two of them. So, I was looking at replacing the files from another install and hopefully fixing this. But its not looking good.

DId you look at the second link? If you can uninstall the language add-on I think you will be fixed.

I will check that out. Thank you.

I am thinking I will have to reinstall it? Seems java and this PCLaw depend on them to run in the dialog boxes?

Now I will look into how to re-install them....

This might turn out to be an easy fix? If the language file is corrupt as sfc reports then I might be able to switch to another language (i.e. English-UK) and then re-move the english-us and reinstall?

A corrupt language file might explain why dialog boxes are blank? Humm.... interesting. Sounds like a possibility ;) There is hope yet before such a major N/P is done!

Ill update...

Why not just clone the drive to a new one? If those bad sectors are causing the errors it all should work fine on a new drive.

I did clone to a SSD. Everything went fine with a few errors and windows booted and ran fine. However, The simptom I have encountered is that when installing software the dialog boxes are blank.

sfc /scannow reported two files as corrupt and not fixable. So, I was looking at replacing these files from another system running the same version windows. However, I cannot do this from remote as they are protected files evidently - DLL's and the one MUI file. So I might have to drive up there and boot a linux cd and manually replace them.

An idea I did have is that I downloaded this:

http://www.froggie.sk/7lp64sp1.html

That I might be able to install another language, Remove the english language and then reinstall the english language and then set the language back to english. That is what I am looking into right now. IDK.

Just remove them in Add or remove programs. The MUI files are for everything OTHER than US English. It's blowing up because as it tries to display windows it is calling on the language routines, which are broken, if they were intact then it would call the routine and see what you need US English and exit. But as they are damaged the call hangs.

That faulty DLL is installed by the Server 2011 client software. Look and see if that is still installed and uninstall it.

Pardon my ignorance here,

What is 'Server 2011 Client Software' used for? If I remove it what will the ramifications be on this laptop? It used to connect to a windows AD server but now just gets everything from a samba share and third party calendar/email service from a new server.

Best I post the output of the dll check that I saved for this discussion.

It used to connect to the SBS server. IT is the client connection software that you download when you connect a system to the SBS server. If you don't have one then you don't need it.

Thank you very much for the help. I will look at removing it today. I have a remote session set for 1pm.

+ to you.

Removed the MS Server 2011 add on in the programs/features. Rebooted. No difference at all.

I believe at this time that the files are actually part of windows and cannot be easily separated as they are locked from being deleted in anyway except for booting from a boot disk and manually replacing them.

These files are not part of the installed package. They come with any copy of windows 7 even if they have never connected to a server. I have compared these files to my VM of windows and they are there also. To my best understanding these files are languages. In this case the english language pack is corrupted. It seems corrupted in the fact that third party software when installing or running (not all) use these in some fashion for the fonts. Therefore I get the blank dialog windows. Thats my opinion now.

I am going on site later this week to manually replace these files and see if it makes a difference. If it doesnt then I will not waste any more time on this and will just nuke it all and start over.

I appreciate your responses. This is a first for me. In all my years I have not ever ran into this problem. Especially when there is nothing referring to it in the logs. The only clue I have gotten is from running sfc /scannow. So, It is a tough one. But I guess I could spend weeks on this when it would just make good sense to nuke this puppy and reload.

Thank you!

Have you tried an "in-place" upgrade? Copy the contents of the Win 7 DVD to the HDD and run setup?
This may correct your issue.
What about System Restore? Have you tried restoring to a point before the issue?

Have you tried downloading the language packs from MS?

Hello,

Well, I havent tried the inplace upgrade as I am not on site and its about 1.5 hours away. Its a thought though. System restore I actually havent. I should have. Guess I have my blinders on.

As for the language packs, They only work with Ultimate and Enterprise versions as I have read.

I have surgery setup for Friday late afternoon. I think the easiest way is to boot up to linux, Mount the partition and replace the files from a known working install of windows 7 pro. I will try that first and report back on it.

Thanks again,

Just an update on this issue.

Traveled up to the location to try and replace these files that show bad. Replacement went good but still have the original issues. So, I picked up the laptop to take back to the shop and reinstall the whole sheebang. While I was there I got a look at the clients setup for using the Laptop.

This is a HP Probook with a docking station and then a 17" Dell monitor hooked to it and an external keyboard and mouse. The Monitor has the lovely blurry vertical lines across the screen. Obviously the monitor is running out of time here. So, I got back to the shop and called the client and suggested just moving to a new desktop computer and monitor. I do not understand how you can work on such an arrangement as the client had.

Sold them a nice dell i5 system with a wonderful 32" LG Monitor ;)

The only thing I do not like about Dell's is the stupid keyboard and mouse they ship with them. So, I am going to sit down today and order up replacement keyboard / mouse today.

Ill just reload windows on the probook and some basic stuff so the client can use it whenever he wants personally.

End of problem and it turned out well :)
