GEOS, rings a bell.
GEOS was known as the poor man's windows. I think it was under $50 back in the day. It's main competition was Win 3.1 but after Win32 came out, it pretty much spelled soon as even back then Win32 already hosted such a wide variety of apps.
I used to run it. If I recall, they had a few native apps, but they were few and not really that useful. I don't even think they had a calculator.
They mimicked the Mac OS effect when opening an app that a box outline would form around the app icon and enlarge to the entire screen if memory serves.
So basically it was high on looks but very short on functional.
