Went out to a customers house today. Java was causing BSOD when Internet Explorer was loaded. When I disabled Java no more BSODs.

Naturally I went straight to add/remove programs (xp machine & ie8 by the way) and they had the old version of java runtime version 5 with 4 updates and then version 6 with around 4 updates well.

When I tried to uninstalll any of them it would say please close any open internet explorer windows and when I clicked continue it said an installation had been previously interupted and it needs to roll it back so I click ok to continue and then got BSOD.

Next startup I checked Task manager and confirmed no iexplorer.exe processes were open, and used rkill.exe to be sure. I went and tried to uninstall and got same message followed by BSOD.

The next startup I tried to install the latest Java over top this time I didn't get the first message but I got the second message followed by BSOD.

The next startup I downloaded a program called javara.exe which finds old versions of java and removes them. I run that progams and was soon greeted by the BSOD.

I tried using renovo uninstaller in the mode where it doesn't use the programs uninstaller but still got BSOD.

I went to system restore and there was no points which dated back 3 months that had anything to do with Java. I spoke to the customer and they said the problem start quiet awhile ago and they had stop using this computer for internet browsing.

At this point I felt it was uneconomical to go any further given I am on an hourly rate. I told the customer Java had serious error I could spend another couple of hours poking around for the issue or just re-install windows which be cheaper for them.

The customer said they are switching to Mac and they don't want to spend anymore money on that computer as it is already 5 years old.

Has anyone had Java get stuck/corrupt to the point you can't load over it or uninstall it.

Java is pretty important part of the cogs. I noticed Ask toolbar would not uninstall and when I tried to re-install it, it wouldn't coz it says it needed Java and also Zonealarm had issue on their computer I suspected was also Java related.

Couple of months ago I came across a computer in a medical billing office...was having issues with a web based portal which were java related so I had to do a cleanup. Uninstalls didn't work...so like you, went Revo...no luck, went and found JavaRa....still no luck. Ended up using the old Microsoft installer cleanup utility with success.

Have never seen Java issues case a blue screen though...wow.

Have just downloaded and added to my toolkit.

In the beginning when customer showed me bluescreen I pulled out memtest cd out and got it ready but after playing around abit I wasn't convinced the time waiting for the scan would be justified. If the computer was in the workshop I would have glady run a disk and ram test on it but I was on callout.

I know its possible for java to cause a bsod but I have never heard of that happening while uninstalling it. What BSOD is it?

IRQ_NOTEQUAL TO.... Can't remember the code number.

Error happen on uninstall, re-install, or opening IE8 with Java Plugin enabled did not happen when chrome opened. Possibly it was one of the version 5 javas and as chrome was installed later the older Java plugin might not have been installed in a recently installed chrome.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

;)

Many older consumers have had enough over the years of being Microshafted. If only Windows 7 was after XP, Mircosoft wouldn't be in this delema.

I think I would have tried to reinstall IE after the BSOD and no avail at an update with java.

I didnt see where you may have tried downloading the offline java installer via firefox or chrome.

But it sounds more like a file corruption problem than Java. IMO.

If it still didnt work, I would run sfc /scannow.

If after that, I would have offered to bring the computer to my shop since it would be cheaper. 65 for the first hour, then 65 for it being on my bench.

Sounds like a java trojan/rootkit they are quite common and many av's and malware scanning programs miss them, try running combofix.

Great comments.

I should have run HDDscan in the background whilst I was working. Java could have been taken out by some naughty areas on the drive.

I guess I would have went into the registry at hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall\{26A24AE4-039D-4CA4-87B4-2F83216013FB}

id probably check to see if theres any other java entries in the uninstall registry area. Id probably export the java entries then delete them followed by renaming the java directory and installing java. Then from there if you still have blue screens id be looking at other possible causes.

Do you ride a Harley to jobs? My mode of transport is the other end of the Man spectrum "Smart ForTwo".

"Yes"...quite often.
Hey, I don't knock those smart cars...plenty of 'em around. I've yet to see if I can fit on on, I'm 6'5"...dunno if my head would poke out the roof like a giraffe. But regarding the other end of the man spectrum...in my 20's I drove a Pontiac Fiero....
