So we are doing our first 13" Macbook screen replacement. Heated the black border of the glass and using suction cups but it's not separating from the back. Any tips or advice on how to get the glass off? I pulled so hard at one point the suction cup came off and hit me in the:eek:

Just needs more heat probably, try and "scan" the bezel with the heat gun (dont keep it in one place for to long or it will damage the components)...I've done one of these and took me a good 30 minutes before I could separate it. Now I just buy the entire display assembly and do it that way, way to much time and I'm always scared of shattering the glass :)

I looked for the entire assembly and cost seems to be 3x what I can get the lcd for. I'd also rather use a new screen vs a used assembly.

You say MacBook, but is this a Macbook pro? there are differences.

As said above, the normal way is to buy the top assembly. but if you want to give it a go, look at this video. Chances are pretty good that you will break the glass. It is very slow going.

The iFixit guide makes it look easier than it is. watch how long this guy takes.

It's a Macbook, not a Macbook Pro. I've watched videos and read the iFixit guides. They do make it look easy. Anyone have a decent source for the entire assembly?

Wow, these things have gone up in price. i used to be able to buy refurbished parts for a little over $250, then it's easy to replace.

I have used DVwarehouse, because it's local and I can get parts same day and they give good service. They have one of the lowest prices I've seen on the web, but it's not cheap. For most things, they are usually a bit higher than other places.

At these prices, I would have to take another look at pulling the glass. If you break it, it's only another $50.

It takes heat and a lot of patience, but it can be done. I typically try and keep a few spare glass panels around that way if I do crack one while getting to the LCD, I have one to replace it with. They are fairly reasonably priced, around $25 US.

After heating you can use a credit card (or similar plastic) to slide in between the glass and computer. be sure it's heated enough and barely put the cc in, use a corner and like I said BARELY put it in, you only need to break up the 1/8th of an inch strip of glue. And as your moving it around the glass if you hit a tough spot where it's requiring a lot of force, heat that area some more then continue.

One thing to note, when putting the new glass back in make sure the corners aren't dented. And if they are you will need to bend them back before putting the glass on. It won't look as pretty though :/ you should tell your client if this is the case.

I would be charging A LOT more in in labour to do this vs replacing the whole display assembly. Plus, I have seen plenty of the third party glass with factory defects.

I've done probably 50 of those screen replacements...I still hate doing them. They're the worst, when the glass is already broken.

Basically, it just takes patience. I usually start from the bottom middle and work toward a corner, because the adhesive is the thinnest there. Be careful with running a credit card or something along the edge, because the black rubber around the glass will melt and get all marred up. Basically, get something between the glass and screen once you get it up...then slowly heat it up as you go.
