Hello All,

I'm facing a bit of an odd dilemma here. But a bit of amusing background first. The client called and left a message saying, in part " It looks like it's been shattered, but there's no break in the glass on the surface, but I see like fracture lines I all I see is white found like some black Blobby things at the bottom of the screen." This is the photo I received once I asked:

It never occurred to me that what she. might have meant by "the glass surface" was the digitizer surface (which isn't glass), but now I've filed that away for future reference, as someone else is bound to say, "I see broken glass but the glass isn't broken," at some point in the future.

I am having one heck of a time locating a replacement screen-digitizer assembly that I am 100% certain is correct. The highest confidence level I've reached is actually one on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/401849095830?epid=622812835&hash=item5d90129696:g:1-wAAOSwLl9dVcfz

I'm just wondering if anyone has actually replaced a screen on any of the 17-by units with a touchscreen and able to confirm an HP part number or what I need to look for in a non-OEM part (which is the more likely route). It looks like the price of these assemblies has skyrocketed over the last several months, as the last one I did (and asked about here in regard to whether it was even worth considering not doing it as "a unit" but just getting a screen - Answer: No) as I know that one was under $200, but not by all that much. I think it was about $190.

In my experience cl models are "club" as in Wally World, etc. So parts can be extremely hard to find. Back when CompUSA was alive customer used to bring them in and we had the hardest time getting certain parts like motherboards. Have them send you a picture of the barcode label with serial number. Go to partsurfer.hp.com and plug that in. Hopefully it'll pull up a BoM. Alternatively you can try the HP part number but I've found that to be more problematic with club machines.

I've got a Samsung laptop here in similar shape... but the only source for the display I can find is a Chinese outfit that's... well sketchy would describe them kindly.

So even if you can get the part number for the full assembly, you might not be able to source it. This silicon shortage has things weird.

It seems doubtful to me that this is a refurb or secondhand.

And based on the fact that there are dedicated support pages for the HP 17-by1955cl, I don't think it was a "club special," either. Taking a look at the service manual in a couple of minutes. I will give HP credit for making these available as many other makers don't.

When i replace screens for people i always ask for the device in so i can take the screen model number from the back of the screen. I then search my suppliers for this and they can send me the same thing/one that is 100% compatible. I find this by far the safest way.
If the screen is separate from the digitizer, it looks like you may not need replace the digitizer, only the screen.
The screen model number listed on your ebay link (B173RTN02.2) is out of stock here in the UK but is listed at £31.55 when in stock.
https://www.panelook.com/modeldetail.php?id=27351 lists some alternative models at the bottom with same/similar specs. None i checked appear to include the digitizer.
