We have a Macbook Pro A1278 (13 Inch Mid 2009) in where the status of the battery is plugged in but not charging.

If left plugged in for long enough (overnight say) then the macbook does charge up.

The battery that is in is a replacement one, origninally the macbook would not power on but now it does with the replacement in.

Things we have tried: SMC and PRAM reset, let the battery completely drain out then charge it back up to 100%. I updated the SMC to the latest version.

As far as im aware the macbook has had a replacement hard drive in the past but apart from that the back has not been taken off.

Im not sure what to try next, anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried a different charger?

Maybe it is faulty.

I have, that was the first thing I tried, sorry I forgot to mention that!

I've still got no ideas on what to try next on this one.

Is the replacement battery and/or charger an original one or a 3rd party generic.

In certain machines I've seen charging issues (and others) when using generic components.

I myself prefer Antec batteries and chargers, but on occasion I have run into stubborn machines that just won't work, unless original parts are used.

Could also be something on the board level, of which I'm no help.

What happens if the battery is removed? Will the machine power on with just AC adapter?

Did you check for stuck pins on the AC adapter? Any crud or debres stuck to the magsafe port on the machine? It is magnetic, so things do get wedged in there. I've found pieces of pencil lead wedged in there before keeping the charger from making good contact with the magsafe board.

Does the charger light up and go amber while plugged in or stay green?

What does system profiler say about the battery...normal, service battery, no battery installed, etc..

Any liquid contact on the logic board? This should go without even having to mention. Usually the number one culprit is liquid hit the board when I see symptoms like this...

On the other hand, I never trust those Chinese knockoff junk batteries. Seen too many machines with those where the machines mysteriously die not too long after installing one of those.

This is becoming a problem with replacement batteries in general. Poor quality knockoffs, some with brand name labels are all over the place.
