MalwareBytes acquires Junkware Removal Tool

If Malwarebytes see themselves as the microsoft of the anti-malware world, they're in for a rude awakening. There's simply too many to buy them all out. Like the hydra, when one goes down, two more pop up to replace it. JRT is somewhat unique in what it does but if it goes away, something else will come along to take it's place. If Malwarebytes start playing hard to get, we'll just move on to the next awesome tool for cleaning up malware.

I don't use techbench but I am in compliance because I sell and install MBAM on EVERY computer I remove malware on.Being a reseller has its advantages.

From the EULA.....

Exhibit 1 – Malwarebytes for Home Users

This Exhibit 1 is incorporated into and made part of the Malwarebytes Software License Agreement if your Purchase Receipt or applicable purchasing documentation accompanying the Software states that you have purchased a subscription to any of the following Malwarebytes products:

· Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium

· Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Premium

1. License Grant. Conditioned upon your compliance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement, Malwarebytes grants you a non-exclusive and non-transferable license to Execute the number of copies of the Software for which you have paid solely in executable form on the corresponding number of Computers owned by you, and solely for your personal, non-commercial purposes (i.e., not on Computers used in a business). You may not transfer the Software to a different user, except that once installed onto a Computer, the Software may be operated by any person using the Computer, directly or (where that person is providing support services to you with respect to that Computer) via remote connection; provided that you are responsible for each such person’s operation of the Software and provided that each such Computer is running an authorized copy of the applicable Software. You may transfer the Software to a different Computer if you uninstall and remove the Software from the first Computer when you install it on the other Computer. For avoidance of doubt, you must have a license to the Software for every Computer on which you operate the Software.

I'm becoming less of a fan of mbam. Since they launched techbench to the tune of what was it, 500 bucks? That's when I was like no. For me as has been said, if I were using mbam, it's only one tool of many, not the only one. Has anyone tried Emsisoft anti malware? I notice they have their standard software, as well as they have an emergency kit that didn't look unreasonably priced. Maybe I'll have to look there. Hitman I know was a little pricey for my liking last I looked. Guess we'll all be pizza techs one day lol.

In seriousness, there was another tool, I think it was called adware removal tool. May read the licensing on that, and see if it's a suitable replacement.

Good point. Tech Bench was purchased by one member but many here balked at it and I did too. I like MBAM but it is definitely not my all in one tool. JRT is a nice tool and I can only hope that is it incorporated properly but at the very least it can still be used as a stand alone tool. I used Emisoft awhile ago but haven't since. I keep hearing positive reviews about it but since it is under the radar for the most part I really don't hear anyone else talk about it including here.

I'll own up I bought it. Never again. In the space of 5 months I had two of their approved usb sticks. both turned out to be faulty after a few months. After my second one I could not be bothered it try and get another from them. One of the biggest wastes of money I have spent.

Which is likely why combo does not work on Windows 8/8.1

ohio_grad_06, afaik combofix runs on Windows 8, but not on 8.1.

Apparently JRT will be discontinued after it's integrated into MBAM (from MBAM ceo):
"The developer of the tool, Filipos Mouliatis, joins our research team and will help us integrate the JRT technologies into our mainline Malwarebytes Anti-Malware product. The tool will survive as a standalone for those who want to continue using it, at least until we're able to replicate the functionality into Malwarebytes Anti-Malware."

Ouch. That stinks.

It makes me sad to see that JRT is on it's way out...I have a script I call ORT (in honor of JRT) and I always look at what JRT does when I'm looking to add features to my script...shucks.

I'm really bummed by this. I run JRT and ADWCleaner on almost every PC because they're so good at finding things in a reasonable amount of time and have never had a problem with either. We'll have to wait to see how things sort out, but must say I'm not very optimistic.

May give the ORT a try. Did you develop it I'm guessing? As far as other things, I tend to use a registry cleaner, and adw cleans out browsers ok.

Btw, anyone checked Auslogic's site lately? They've got a new browser cleanup tool that says no restrictions on home or commercial use.

http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/browser-care/

If you look in the products, they also have a duplicate file finder, registry cleaner, and registry defrag showing the same blurb. I already like their defrag program. Anyone used any of the others?

Yes. I have been working on ORT for a little over a year now, and I model the process/interface after JRT.
Ok, even if ORT is not a perfect tool right now, I think we as repair techs should encourage this kind of thing. Perhaps we can create a sticky and contribute to the pros and cons of ORT and see where it goes.
