MalwareBytes acquires Junkware Removal Tool

Ok, even if ORT is not a perfect tool right now, I think we as repair techs should encourage this kind of thing. Perhaps we can create a sticky and contribute to the pros and cons of ORT and see where it goes.

I am definitely open to suggestions and improvements. What I use currently to fine-tune ORT is a log of any malware remover that is used after ORT. I have a file submission tool on my website (and I can make a drag-n-drop one too...) for FTP-ing me samples or logs.

I absolutely agree. Another member here @AlexCa has come up with a Windows Repair Toolbox and I use that almost daily. Tools like this would really help us out. Who knows maybe you can integrate that tool into the Toolbox at some point?

Maybe you should set up a donation page so techs can donate? I did like jrt so I'll give this a try. Tools like this are a good thing as jimbo pointed out.

Thanks for the suggestion! A PayPal button has been added, and anyone who feels so inclined is welcome to use it.

As far as integrating into The Windows Repair Toolkit -- I'm open to the idea. ORT is available via HTTP with a standard URL, and I can get FTP access to it working as well.

I haven't tried ORT yet, just viewed your screencast video.

I would like to have a preview of (at least some of) the removal candidates before they are nuked. For example, the hosts file, scheduled tasks and DHCP/DNS settings may be legitimately customised. Alternatively, back up these files and settings to a folder on the Desktop, just in case. See also, the way AdwCleaner handles this.

Thanks for taking the time to start a project like this (there's always room for a better mousetrap ;) ) and for publicising it here. When you sell out to Malwarebytes in a few years time, remember those of us who supported you in the early days.:D

I'll see what I can figure out -- part of what makes ORT different it is doing some heuristics. Currently, it nukes everything in the scheduled tasks (non-windows items only), and it does the same for the hosts file -- it resets the file permissions, and deletes everything in the hosts file and enters the loopback addressed only (127.0.0.1 and ::1).

The DHCP/ static address settings are backed up, and the DNS will still be set to manual if it was originally manal, but the address fields will be blank. The settings can be found in C:\ORT\ip-backup.txt.

I have an idea or two in mind for a "Virus Vault," but ORT uses the native delete and move commands in Windows - and delete has a nice simple recursive switch that lets me generally clean out the most commonly infected areas of a PC.

Tried this a day or so ago on an xp system, and it acted as though I didn't have permission to run it from an admin's account. I was able to take ownership and it ran, but never created the C:\ORT folder, and logs were blank as though I had no permissions. Ideas?

ORT isn't compatible with XP...It makes use of a lot of native command line functions, and the XP kernel doesn't support most of what ORT does. I'll add that to the website!

All OS's Vista and higher should work (10 has not been tested yet).

Has someone experience with Malwarebytes Techbench ? These tool costs 500€ for 12 month, and each year 500€.
is this worth for this tool?

It is comes as usb stick, wich should protect from Viruses and Malware. This is cool, but the renewal fee is to high.

Any comment?

I did have it, After a few months the usb drive failed and had to get a replacement. which took a few months, then the replacement failed. and I gave up. it was an okay product but seems poor quality drive and expensive for what it is.
