what's that you're driving Martyn?

and do you permanently have your mag-signs mounted on your car?

VW Golf GT TDI. Yes they are mag plates that I leave on all the time.

nice, I'm about to downgrade to a cheapie Kia Rio - the prices of fuel are shocking!

I thought about having the mag plates but worry that they'll attract the wrong kind of attention - ie they say "free computer gear inside"

I keep my mag signs most of the time. It acts as free advertising outside a customers house. They are easy to take off and put in the car if have to leave the cat in a more 'disreputable' area.

I also take them off when I'm not working. It gives the paint underneath a chance to breath.

The Golf does 40mpg but I'm thinking of getting rid of my wifes Fiesta(28mpg), giving her the Golf and getting a Smart car. They do around 60-80mpg. It would be just for work

+1 to this although I don't take them off, you never know who might see them

I looked at the Smart cars but didn't like the pocket sized boot

It is small but I don't leave anything in the car and carry two bags with me. I also have a spare desktop and a keyboard. Because most of my calls are within 15 minutes of my house I'm not likely to carry more than one computer. As I say it's for work only. You can pick up a lowesh mileage 5 year old one for under £4k and I can recover most of that from the sale of the Fiesta. The other option is to get it on a lease. I have a Land Rover for other times such as bad weather.

I believe you folks over the pond pay more for fuel than we do in the states ?So I feel for you I have a Honda CRV and while it is not that good on gas I do like it.It gets 28 mpg on a highway around town 25 to 26 mpg. When it is paid off I may look into something a little better.

Yes we do. Diesel is now around 135p for a litre I think around £6 a gallon!

Hmm, on the note of cars my I went with a truck for my company, its really great for carrying a lot of equipment and plus the 4 wheel drive is a plus with this insane amount of snow we got this year. Got my 2009 Chevy Suburban Three Quarter Ton Fully Loaded for my business, and according to my DIC (Dashboard Information Center...) I am getting between 9-11 MPG Around Town / Occasional Highway Usage, but lately its been between 7-8 because of the 4 wheel drive. But I needed something big, I am 6.6 feet tall and need plenty of head room, plus any car I would buy would have to be a Chevy

Seeing as I'm partly responsible for derailing the member picture thread:

I'm about to buy a new car and was thinking about running it through the business so offsetting the cost of petrol, maintenance against tax.

I'm a sole trader in the UK, and have previously used my personal car and claimed the 40p per mile against tax.

I use my car 95% for business and 5% personal.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this?

When I started up last June and mentioned the 40p a mile claiming my accountant said claim for the car otherwise I won't get much out of it. I bought my Golf from the leasing company for £8600 as it was my old company car. The accountant told me to claim all running costs and he will put something in for private mileage use. Since then I have fitted two new tyres at £220 plus obviously business car insurance, tax, mot, servicing and breakdown cover. I expect it becomes a company asset and will be written off over 4 years but I'm not sure. I need to make a decision on the Smart car if I go that route. So your accountant will advise you but that is what mine said and i'm a sole trader as well.

Btw good idea for this thread as I think there will be a lot on this subject.

We use HP for a Single large van and we are a Limted, VAT registered company..

under HP, We had to pay a slightly higher deposit (equal to our VAT).

Under operating lease, you will get a tax deduction (not VAT) for your monthly payments (not VAT for us as we paid for this upfront and had already claimed it back) You also wont get capital allowances.

Points for consideration, monthly payments for cashflow, who owns the leased van at the end of the period (we will), who is responsible for repairs and other costs if the asset is leased (we are), how much interest is being charged on the HP and are you getting a good deal on the HP interest? (ours was around 5%)

These are a couple of points of the top of my head but I'm sure other people will have points to make but the above is the initial info I would be looking at.

I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and I regret buying it. Not big or secure enough for tech work. Had to remove the back seat to fit my tools and any computers so I can't have more than one passenger. I put an $800 stereo/nav unit in so I could do away with my bluetooth headset and TomTom, but now I can't get a soft top like I had planned for fear of having my radio stolen. One nice thing about them is the steel body. I slid into a ditch and had a minor dent in my fender, but any other vehicle made out of fiberglass would have needed a new front end. I would like to sell it and buy a 2003-2006 Ford Explorer or similar sized vehicle, but selling it is the hard part right now.

BTW if anyone is looking for a toy I am trying to sell my Jeep. Let me know if you want details.

Not realated to taxes or anything, but I have a Mini Cooper S.
I love it! Awesome gas mileage, just sporty enough for me, and I really like having a hatchback.
The very first day I had it, I had to haul three towers, three monitors and two high-end scanners...it was a tight fit and I thought it was the sign of things to come, but really it's been a great car for my purposes.
