I mean .... it's an amazing idea they are having here. If it's true.

Moving people from pirated to legit just makes it more likely they will go legit next time .... any opinions on this?

I read this article very quickly when a client was late for an appointment, so I haven't taken the time yet to vet the information.

I am of the understanding that they will begin charging something like $100 a year after a period of time... just watched the Verge Video here: http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/18/8241023/windows-10-free-for-software-pirates
Personally, not really looking forward to the 'How Do I Do This' questions from clients that I can see coming in the distant future.

As quickly as computers systems get replaced now, this is a good move as I also understand that this FREE O/S 10 will stay free for the life of that system that you installed Windows 10 on (during the first year that Windows 10 is launched).
I suspect the need for more processing and memory will require new hardware... maybe replacing the video card with an upgraded card or increasing the ram in your currently running Windows 10 computer will end the 'free lifetime' event of the O/S ????

Microsoft hasn't released the 'bad' news as yet... more news to come after you've upgraded to Windows 10:D:D:D

Actually, from what I've read if you are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1, Windows 10 preforms better on the same hardware.

I haven't actually used it so I can't say for sure, but if I'm wrong I'll get flamed out here in a sec ;)

Our plan is to charge a flat rate to upgrade computers and just mill them through the shop. The answer to "How do I upgrade to Windows 10" is to bring it in so we can do it for you.

This is something I would love to do. Just have tons of regular end user machines coming in for this would be a big boost
to my bottom line. Heck, I would probably hire some people just to do this sort of thing in an assembly line type
fashion. I REALLY hope Windows 10 turns out to be a money maker for us, unlike Windows 8 which was more of a pain in the ass.

From my very limited testing I find this to be true. However I moved back to both Win 7 and 8.1 on two different machines due to beta build bugs.

Free windows is free. Or more like "Pirates who take software for free will get software for free?..."

Even if M$ hadn't offered it, those who've been running pirated OS'es for years will do just the same when the new one comes out. M$ "offering free windows 10 to pirates" won't encourage any of them to go legit. That's like saying offering a bank robber a pile of free cash will make him want to get it through proper means next time. Yeah right.

Just silly. Let's expose it even more, and encourage it! That will fix the problem!

"So, if you fall into the camp of your Windows build not being a genuine install, be prepared for a watermark to show up on the desktop if you upgrade."

My goodness, with a deterrent like that this will certainly bring an end to piracy of the Windows operating system. I mean, it's not like the hackers are going to update WGA remover or KMSpico or Windows Loader. Damn you Microsoft, you clever bastards !

LOL :D

Fact is, Microsoft don't want to eliminate piracy all together, they just want to encourage people to pay for their software. They could make Windows a lot more difficult to pirate if they wanted to.

If it it became impossible to pirate Windows, more people would turn to free alternatives and Microsoft would quickly lose their market dominance, and they know it. Piracy is not only a necessary evil, it's a valuable marketing tool, something the music and movie industry have been slow to realise.

I wonder if the watermark will show up only if the previous version of Windows showed the watermark (or was detected as 'non-genuine' in some way). What if the previous version of Windows believed it was genuine because of some loader/hack?

I think it matters on how the update will be delivered and how it can be applied. For example even if you are legitimate will you be able to install the free update on a clean system? Or will the update need to see a previous install? I never change versions of windows without a nuke of the hdd. I'm betting that will void the freebie. Which means I'll be buying my copies of Windows 10. (If my assumption is correct and we all know how to spell assume.)

Just like Win 8 during install you can choose not save anything and do a clean install.

Back upper is good for this and is free.

If they release a media creation tool it might be possible to extract the key.

I'm concerned about this myself. Also, I was a little unnerved today by the way it said it would just download the installer on my system and be ready to go when I thought it convenient, but um, I don't really want Microsoft automatically downloading installers on my system, especially something as huge as a new OS.
