Microsoft is providing free upgrade to Windows 10 .... even for pirated OS

I'd rather just setup a pi to do hulu/netflix etc.

When 10 comes out one of the pi models will be coming with Windows 10, so there's that too.

Also - just did some more reading on the Windows 10 updgrade and if you already have a Pro version of 7 or 8 you get the Pro for 10.

In case anyone (like me) didn't read that part ... Pro lets you opt out of updates (unlike Home)

Looks like Microsoft just gave another reason for businesses to use Pro like their supposed to. With very few exceptions it's not the home users that need to test updates first.

Well ... as long as Microsoft is quick to hotfix things they release....

I received a phone call this morning asking a question about the upgrade. She told me that someone was advertising on CL in her area about upgrading to Windows 10 and they were charging her $80. I told her that they were not being honest and then explained to her the 'upgrade option' that her computer may be compatible for. We made an appointment later today to come into my shop for me to verify. I did it for two people yesterday and after making sure with their Windows updates, they have the icon, waiting for July 29.

A lot of home users who are not savvy enough may fall victim to these so-called 'Windows 10 install services'. I'm starting to see this a lot in my area.

But there will be honest ones that are marketing upgrade services like I am to do the upgrade for them and $80 does not seem unreasonable if they are doing it legally.
Remember the software is free but our labor is not.

Yes. I intend to offer upgrade services for my clients. The only reason I haven't fully committed advertising yet to it is because I am uncertain of the Windows Update issue on the free versions. Home is supposed to have forced upgrades. Pro is supposed to have controlled upgrades using WSUS, Patch Tuesday, etc. But the rumor is that free versions will not have that option even if they are Pro. Not an option I want to provide to business clients.

Hi, just an update. The customer turned out to be a woman in her early 60's with college age children who do not live at home with her but told her to call a local computer shop because they were too busy, which is kinda sad. Anyway, she initially saw the CL and she showed it me. Although I can't post the ad here, the title clearly stated 'Upgrade your computer to Windows 10 Today'....very misleading of course. I made sure she had her Windows updates and she now has the 'Get Windows Icon' on her machine. I explained to her again that it will be released on next month.

She was very appreciative of the time and I gave her my card and she promised she'd call me to help her in future. I did feel bad and I didn't charge her this time. And yes, the upgrade is free and our service is not, I agree but in this particular case, I wanted to help her out. In the end, I gained a new customer and I'm glad of that.

CL is plagued with computer repair listings, for a novice user it can very hard to choose the right person.

Nothing wrong with charging someone $80 to upgrade to 10 when it launches. Upgrade today is very misleading or they are using the TP.....

Anyway, don't dismiss legit advertising of people offering that service. It's a labor job just like any other.

Exactly...when it launches. As I already shared, this poor lady was being mislead by someone who advertised that they could do it last week. In this particular case the advertising was NOT legit, that's why I shared my experience. I'm already aware of it being a labor job and service, that goes without saying.

"Frustratingly, infuriatingly, mystifyingly we have no way of knowing because – even with just three weeks to go before launch – Microsoft’s controlled drip feed of Windows 10 information shows no sign of speeding up.

Yes it’s mad. Microsoft is releasing arguably the most important version of Windows in its history this month and we don’t know how long it will be supported or what future costs we will be charged after this unknown period. Instead Microsoft simply keeps shouting:

“It’s Free! It’s Free! It’s Free!*”
(*for the lifetime of the device – and we won’t define ‘lifetime’ or what happens after that)

This sucks. It sucks because there could be a perfectly good explanation but Microsoft is not being open about it.

It sucks because upgrading Windows versions is not an easy task for many users and even more of a hassle to downgrade if users find they’ve been shortchanged. And it really sucks for those who buy a new Windows 10 PC and are locked into the unknown.

But most tragically it sucks because Windows 10 is actually a great OS. Throughout my participation in the Windows Insider testers program it has been the fastest, most stable series of Windows betas I’ve used, but Microsoft may be about to hamstring the whole thing.

Promising ‘Free Windows 10′ then delivering ’Freemium-Windows-10-Get-Your-Credit-Cards-Out-In-Two-Years’ would be a disaster and right now Microsoft’s ongoing silence about how everything works feels ever more suspicious.

Ultimately at this stage the company is either playing us or its naivety is now bordering on idiotic. It’s a crazy situation to be in where we all have to hope and pray it is the latter…"

Couldn't have said it better myself. Suspicious.

Maybe I'm just tired but actually I found that article answered next to nothing, other than a little bit about when it might be available to business customers and Insiders. It doesn't answer any of the burning questions about payment, updates, piracy, clean installs, downgrading, etc., etc. It looks more like a marketing piece than a real update.

Gordon Kelly has updated his article (July 10th) and nothing's really changed in a week. Microsoft is still being suspiciously vague about the important stuff.

Ok how much Windows will cost: http://www.geek.com/microsoft/microsoft-confirms-how-much-windows-10-will-cost-1624352/ $119 for Home $199 for Pro. Much the same prices as 8 has been.
On Updates your quoted article explains how they will be handled for the most part. If your on CBB you can delay upto 4 months. If you use a WSUS server you can delay up to 8. You can refuse updates but if you do you are stuck without support from that point on. Only Pro users will get the choice of CBB. Home users will have to take updates when they come out. And Tech Preview users will have to take beta updates as well.
Piracy options have pretty much been redacted. Multiple sources have pretty much said that if your copy of Windows isn't genuine you will NOT get a free Windows 10 version. However anyone can join the technical preview and if you join the TP NOW before 29th of July you can continue using it after Win 10 launches. Effectively a permanent Beta program which I suspect you can join even after the 29th of July. So if you are willing to beta test you can get Win10 free. (And yes the CL Pizza techs will abuse this but so what? They will get beta crashing systems because of it.)
Clean Install. My article has stated that you will be allowed to download an ISO. And it will clean install.
Downgrading. Windows, like most versions of Windows, wipes out the previous version so it is unlikely you can hit a button and roll back but if you have a license for Windows 7 or 8 nothing stops you from going back to it.
Life of the machine? Just a guess on my part but I suspect that it will closely follow OEM licensing. You get your free copy on ONE motherboard who's hardware will be hashed into a code and linked to your Microsoft Account. Change too much like the motherboard and it will deactivate you'll then have to buy a copy. Purchased copies will follow the traditional Retail license terms. OEM will follow the traditional terms there as well. IOW you get you use your copy of Windows 10 until the motherboard dies. Or you buy a new computer which will ship with Win 10 anyway.
