Mov file repair

Has anyone ever repaired a mov file? I have a client that used a canon power shot 5000 to take some videos but when he went to play them they don't open. I have tried to open them but they open as audio and not video.

So far I have tried windows media player, QuickTime, hand break, vlc player. I have googled and found some program's that claim to fix them but the websites don't look professional and I don't like installing program's from websites like this.

Have you tested it yourself? Meaning did you check the settings on the device and record a video yourself.

I would try to use a video editing program as well. Never tested this but you can download Windows Movie Maker and the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. You are supposed to be able to open .mov files to convert or edit.

VLC has a repair option which has worked on a couple of files for me.

If all else fails.

Try and convert them to a different format....MP4....AVi, etc.'

Try Format Factory or Any Video Converter.

I didn't know about vlc repair but will check these out.

I didn't see the device itself. Helping an old client who is a distance away. They uploaded the files to Dropbox direct from the sd card.

Thanks for the suggestions though and I will try them tomorrow.

If it were my client, I would start by diagnosing the source which would start with a full sector-by-sector clone of the SD card.
