got a couple year old hp in the shop today. The client said a friend of his said it was a bad motherboard. I said could be but i would really need to take a look. put in on the bench and turned it on just to see what was happening for myself. you can hear the fans start up and the HDD buzzing but no screen.

Now i open it up. 2 of the four sticks off are clearly only half in(only one end clicked in... I dont know how this could have happened. Resat the ram properly. turned it on nothing. All the fans started up for about 30 seconds and then stopped. Removed the discrete graphics card and plugged it into the onboard and turned it on. same result. Next put in a good psu same result. just for hahas i removed all the sata connections same result. Now i would have to say its a bad motherboard but what about the cpu and ram..... dont have another machine with the right specs to test them on. what would you do and do you agree with my conclusions?

thanks everyone for you second opinion(s)!!!!

You could try kicking down to one stick and then changing it to the others one at a time... what about trying to boot with a windows disc or a linux disc/stick?

I would kick it down to one stick of RAM and disconnect everything, then try booting to the UBCD, or a linux usb stick. At least you will know if the hardware works. Also disconnect everything and see if the mother board beeps like it should.

Similiar situation

I had a similar problem with a clients computer. I turn the machine on, fans spin, hdd kicks on, no beeps, black monitor. I opened the case and reseated all the SATA connections, swap the RAM, even tested the psu. SAME PROBLEM. I checked the cpu's pins, everything checked out great. So, I took out the mobo and set it up to my barebone system with different components such as hard drive, ram, etc. SAME PROBLEM. the mobo problem immediately popped in my head. LUCKILY, a buddy of mines with his own shop had the same and compatible mobo. I installed it, Windows loaded up with NO PROBLEM...wiped the sweat from my head, time for a drink,,,lol:)

I usually determine that a motherboard is bad (after checking visually for blown capacitors) by removing all ram and turning the computer on. If there are no beeps, the motherboard is bad.
Am I crazy or what?:D:confused:

I have seen this loads, all the fans start, there are no beeps, and shortly afterwards the PC shuts down. I would replace the PSU, before replacing the motherboard. Symptoms sound like a PSU issue.

check with a good psu... same problem. Its def the motherboard... found a computer to test ram all good.... i have only seen 2 bad cpu am i lucky or they dont fail as much?

If you've tested the PSU then yes, I agree it sounds like the MB. I have only ever come across 1 bad CPU. I do carry a range of CPU's to test with just in case.

A bad CPU should generate beeps. I had a PC in the work shop a few months ago, they had taken it to my competitor next door who said it needed a new motherboard.

I took it out of the case and tested it, it worked fine, I then checked the USB ports and discovered there was a short on one of them.

So take the board out of the case and make sure there is nothing shorting before finally declaring a bad board.
