new CPE scortching hot

i purchased a used CPU [ntel Pentium 4 650 3.4 GHz SL7Z7 LGA 775 CPU[/B]] for an ASUS MB :

ASUS P5G41T-M LX PLUS LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Issue is, right when i put in the CPU it became extremely hot in a matter of seconds.. I'm talking about scorching hot!! I took it out and ensured it was put in the correct way, no pins are bent on the CPU nor on the board...

My question is, what would cause it to become extremely hot in less than 2 second? The MB didn't even have time to post by the time it was scortching hot...

Please advise!!!
 
You did install the fan/cooler and check to be sure it made full contact, greased properly, etc..

If you can, be sure to load defaults in the BIOS and note the revision of the BIOS for additional checking with the manufacturer for updates.
 
when u say greased properly, you are referring to thermal paste correct?

The actual socket 775 has a lock which pushes down the CPU onto the motherboard, the FAN doesn't really set it into place much more than that.

I didn't have the fan on top of the CPU, but i was able to install another cpu the same way and minimal heat was generated.

I don't even know what you just said. Take a picture. Should be CPU in socket, with thermal grease on it, heatsink touching the cpu (well with the thermal grease in between) and the fan blowing on the heatsink. I am just making sure we are clear on that since I didnt understand what you just said.

As for the issue at hand. I do not see that motherboard supporting any Prescott CPU's until after bios revision 0604 and even then it doesnt list the 650 but lets go with the assumption that its probably going to work with the newest bios.

P4's are HotPlates (especially Prescott)! So where you might get away with a 2 second power-on with a LGA775 Wolfdale Core2 and no heatsink, you will not do so with any P4. Oh and buy a new proc, you most likely just toasted that one....
 
ok, let me explain for you that didn't understand

The processor is in the socket securely fastened. I didn't place the fan on it with thermal paste but i provided power to the system for seconds only.

Ok.. I understand that it should have a fan and thermal paste on it... [I DO], but egardless of that, if the CPU is scorching hot,thermal paste and Fan will not cool it down that much... My whole point of this post was that the CPU is unusually hot! That my concern. If you power on a CPU for a matter of seconds in its socket, it should not be getting that hot...
 
ok, apparently getting help at this point is useless.

LOL'ing at me is great, doesn't really bother me, but would like know if i can get an answer to this.. IF you don't... just say u don't know..

BTW....i didn't use my finger.. i licked it.. and it burned my tounge!

He may be right, 2 seconds from cold boot to scorching is a very rapid increase. I suppose cpu voltages could be incorrect, specially if you have one of the older bios revisions.
 
Never EVER turn on a computer without the heat sink securely attached.

The heat sink does do a much better job then you would imagine having the heat spread out over large area instead of concentrated on the small contact of the CPU is what the whole Heat sinks purpose is.

You may not have destroyed that CPU but it wasn't a cookies and icecream day for it either.
