No Display after POST

Hi again! (I'm becoming a frequent poster, that's probably not good)

I recently installed a new EVGA GTX 960 into my client's computer. It was the same exact card he had installed before, but the card previous had a chipped HDMI port and therefore could not run via HDMI. That being said, the computer ran fine via DVI. The motherboard has no display ports to use for troubleshooting purposes, so I am limited to the card itself.

After installing the new graphics card (again, identical to the one removed except it doesn't have a broken HDMI port), the computer booted to the POST/BIOS screen no problem via HDMI. But once it started loading the OS, before getting to the Windows Logo screen, the display goes black and shows no connection. When using DVI, though, it displays perfectly fine.

I guess my first step should be to boot into safe mode with networking and see if I experience the same issues? Not sure if its relative to the OS or if it's something about the motherboard.

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0

Any advice would be awesome!

EDIT: I have since updated the bios to the most recent version, and that change anything

This is a picture I've taken within the BIOS. Not sure if the "Legacy OpROM" setting having priority over the "UEFI driver first" could be effecting it.

EDIT: Tried changing this setting, didn't make a difference.

i think you'll need to boot up with dvi and hdmi connected and switch the windows primary monitor over to the hdmi connection. disconnect the dvi and leave the hdmi connected and reboot and it should be good.

I've got the computer hooked up to two different monitors, one DVI and one HDMI. After loading into Windows fine (presumably via the DVI) I check display options and only one display is recognized. I don't see any option to change the priority from DVI to HDMI.

EDIT: Did you mean to plug both DVI and HDMI to the same monitor? As opposed to two different ones?

I think he meant two monitors. You should be able to specify two monitors somewhere. If it was me I'd try uninstalling the software and then rebooting with the HDMI plugged in. Then re-load the software.

(Granted, the computer is running windows 10 - I dont think it would make much of a difference) The computer isn't identifying two different displays when I plug them (DVI & HDMI) into separated displays. It only recognizes one (presumably the DVI).

Software as in OS? Or just video drivers. Perhaps I should uninstall and reinstall the video drivers one more time before backing everything up for a reinstall of the OS.

and therein lies your dilemma. so lessee: could be the card but we have seen it work on hdmi during POST so that seems unlikely, video drivers good candidate, got the latest drivers compatible with win10? try SDI and use some of the suggested alternative drivers then back to the manufacturures web site. Check device manager with both displays attached, i would expect to see both listed there under Monitors. Frankly I don't think a N&P will help but hey, give it a shot if all else fails.

I am uninstalling and reinstalling drivers again in case that has any effect. I also noticed when in the device manager that the picture attached shows the monitor (Acer) as being hooked up via HDMI (when the HDMI is completely unplugged, only DVI is plugged in). Wonder why that might be/if it has anything to do with the issue?

By uninstalling software I am referring to the software package that comes with the video card. If it's properly uninstalled you should see it booting using default, generic Windoze drivers. That is not done by deleting the device in device manager. There will probably be one or two apps in the Programs and Features related to the device.

I ended up doing exactly that @Markverhyden. Rolled back drivers and performed clean installs of them for a second time. I also pushed through some Windows 10 updates that had previously been unable to install. The problem appears to have been resolved, as the computer now boots all the way through to the OS via HDMI. Thanks for the assistance guys, as always you're amazing!

It sounds a little like the weird case I just finished yesterday. For the customer, it booted to the Windows loading screen (merry-go-round) then went black. He said he had just one monitor. In the shop, when I used either DVI or HDMI, the display was normal in each case, booting normally to the login screen, etc. Figured it must be his monitor, so had him bring it in and connected it to either port and again, worked fine. He said, but I plug in both DVI and HDMI connectors from the monitor to their respective ports. Tried it and the problem exhibited itself. I explained that one should use use one cord or the other from the same monitor. Strangely, he's been using it that way for 4-5 years. I figure it must have something to do with which port is defined as primary. Not sure that's any help here, but perhaps to someone else at another time.

I appreciate the response. I ended up resolving the issue using the troubleshooting above. I must say though, if I ever encounter a client using both ports for one monitor I will think of this thread!
