No Mouse In Windows XP

Hi Guys. I'm a long time lurker, seldom poster. But I am truly stumped on an issue with a customers laptop.

It is a Dell Latitude E6400 running Windows XP SP3. It has a touchpad and nipple but neither work in Windows. I have connected a good USB mouse to each of the 4 USB ports, and this doesn't work either.

Firstly, I thought the hardware was suspect, but booting in to any Live CD proves this wrong, as touchpad, nipple and USB mouse all work fine. So it has to be a problem in XP.

I have been down the route of drivers installing, removing, safe mode, manually adding, but still nothing. I'm sure it is not driver related, as no external USB mouse is working either. I have Googled and Googled all day long, but to no avail. I have tried removing upper filters from the HKey/Local Machine/System/Current Control Set/Control/Class registry entry for Mice & Other Pointing Devices. Still no joy.

Any other help would certainly help. Thanks Guys

We have seen viruses camp on just about any driver, so you could go nuts and scan the hell out of it.

A SFC/scannow would probably also be a good idea.

Unistall and Reinstall the chipset drivers if you haven't already.

I would check services after the machine is fully booted. Sort by startup type and look for automatics that are not up. Check other services as well.

Make sure msconfig is not starting in some kind of diag or selective mode.

That's all for me now. Maybe some of that will help.

Avast boot time scan didn't pick up anything. Malwarebytes in safe mode also found nothing.

SFC check out ok with no problems.

All services that are supposed to be running are starting correctly.

I have set msconfig to normal boot and safeboot, but the same happens either way. And also just booting in to safe mode has the same problem.

Pulling my hair out now

If I were you I'd toss a spare drive in, format it and reinstall windows XP to it.

Just as a final sanity check.... if it fixed the issue I'd nuke the original drive and reinstall it.

If you haven't already done so, go to device manager and View hidden devices, if you see anything weird or with a bang uninstall it. You might also want to uninstall USB host controllers and reboot to see if that cleans anything up.

I've had this problem and spent literally days trying to track down the source, edits to the registry included. I never found the source nor had any impact on the problem.

I hope you find the solution, please tells us if you do, but you should probably be considering Jimbo's favourite solution , Nuke and Pave.

you could try those registry entries though they from a VM since I dont have an xp box anymore. Just backup the registry before trying them. Reboot after applying them and maybe you'll get lucky.

Try running Malwarebytes in normal mode. It's not designed to be real effective in safe mode. I had one machine like this (mouse not working) and it was a real pain to figure out how to get MWB to run using only the keyboard, but it was worth the effort as whatever MWB found and deleted made the mouse work again.

Sorry no suggestions here, but how did I know before even opening the post that this was a Dell? They seem to be the biggest pain in the rear detecting mouse/keyboard.

Did it ever work correctly? Or did it just start acting flaky?

System restore point to when it was working correctly.

Scan, repair, fix or whatever.

Make sure the scan, repair or fix doesn't cause the problem again.

At least that's what I would try.
