I've seen too many computers crash with contact information in them not to recommend web based email.

Modern email clients (such as emClient) can sync Gmail and Outlook.com contacts.

I'm still shocked at how many people still use POP protocol

That fact that people still using the POP protocol is not an argument against email clients. They all do IMAP, some do Exchange.

You are absolutely correct. But the reality is that many have no idea about email protocols and use "whatever happens to have been setup" which is often without a moment's thought.

I'm talking about real-world issues that occur with relatively high frequency. Thus, that is, in practice, a reason that email clients are a less preferable option to fully server-side options.

But I have no horse in this race other than people making informed decisions. Even if they make a decision I believe to be idiotic, if they do that in full knowledge of the potential ramifications, that's their choice to make.
