[REQUEST] Outlook Alternative

Also, and this doesn't just apply just to you, personally, but I would appreciate it if people did not put words in my mouth that I never said or implied. I have, not once, said that webmail is the one and only option. It may, or may not, be a preferable option for certain people in specific circumstances who may never have even considered it because "it's not what I've always done."
If webmail works for you and your clients, that's great, but it isn't my first choice for me and mine.
I have never, knowingly and deliberately, put words in your mouth. Where I have selectively quoted you, it's in response to a particular part of your posts (generally too long to quote in full) and always where the context is apparent.

The part of my post that I quote here was written specifically to avoid accusations of 'my way or no way', but without having to write a legally-sound diatribe to cover every eventuality.

I think for my older clients the tabs is something they don't like and continue to struggle with as well I believe one of my more recent complaints had to do with some advertising in the Thunderbird client.
When I said 'tabs instead of windows', I should have said 'same tab' – my mistake. This removes the problem of dozens of open windows/tabs.

By default, Thunderbird opens with its Start Page, which shows Thunderbird support and donation information. It's easily disabled by clearing the check box in Preferences – another of my standard changes.

I'm breaking my rule and answering this as I just wake up in the morning so I hope I don't look like an idiot. I try to keep people online. Gmail is actually my preferred email for both business use and for in-home use. Those people who insist on having a computer-based email system I recommend Thunderbird.

My philosophy is not to use a big word when a singularly unloquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity. You know what I mean? 😉

Yeah that wasn't scary at all :)

You're not wrong to point out that Microsoft and Google are competitors... there is however a niggle in your logic.

Due to the nature of M365, it IS in MICROSOFT'S best interest to make Outlook work with competitors, specifically Google. There are a HORDE of organizations out there that use GSuite for cloud services, and M365 for on premise apps. There are a few more than utilize both cloud structures at the same time.

Ok, fair enough. I'll add, though, that I don't believe this incentive runs both ways. So, as long as Microsoft's engineers are successful in maintaining compatibility with Google's product, the customer won't suffer. I'll also concede that this opinion is clearly some armchair-quarterbacking from someone with nothing other than anecdotal experience. :p

I share your cynicism... But evidence suggests otherwise.

We'd not have a working Outlook on GMail today, especially so easily maintained as it is without a collaboration in this space.

I expect this specific thing to continue, if only because of anti-trust pressure from the governments of the world. It's an easy thing to do for either of them to point at and say "look, see!" "We're not being abusive power hungry twits!"

Ah, AOL. Back in the Go-Go 80s and early 90s I worked for AT&T a stone's throw from AOL, which kept hoovering up tech talent from every possible source. They went from zero to sixty in as close to no time at all as it was possible for a tech company to do.

A couple of my former coworkers jumped ship to AOL and became fabulously wealthy having done so, but were also smart enough not to keep all of their proverbial eggs in the AOL basket as far as investing went. They were the smart ones, and those I last knew about remained quite comfortable.

Others, though, were foolish enough to believe that AOL would be the "what goes up will never go down" company, and paid the price. One was someone who retired before age 50 while keeping all of his money in AOL and not paying enough attention not only to the signals of impending downfall but also to the actual steps of same. He didn't remain retired, and lost almost everything.

There's a reason that, "Diversify, Diversify, Diversify," has remained bedrock advice in investing just like, "Location, Location, Location," has been in real estate.

Thats what I was looking for emClient, everybody I have ported to Thunderbird hated it, but they are the not techy type of course

Heh - ...and almost all I've introduced to Thunderbird after trying the newer versions of Outlook have really like it. Mostly because of the condensed default format. I've told them I can make Outlook get close to that format but no one seems interested. I've got a couple of SOHOs that prefer Tbird. (...and one that can't live without Windows Live Mail..... o_O)
