[SOLVED] Printer not printing in Linux

Put it on the network using CUPS with a JetDirect Socket. Usually a quick and bulletproof setup.

Exactly. I would always prefer to use the ethernet printer interface.

The great thing about HP printers with JetDirect network interfaces it that:
1. You can use HP Webadmin / Embedded Webserver to configure one printer, over the network.
It is much more convenient than fiddling round with the printer's LCD display.
2. You can run HP Web Jetadmin (Windows software) to configure all your HP network printers from one machine on the network. It is very useful for updating printer and JetDirect firmware.

Not an option. I believe I explained above (probably the first posting) that one computer is a Windows 7 laptop which will ONLY be used to print via its wireless connection "directly to the printer only!"

And yes I have used HP Web Jetadmin (with the laptop) to configure the printer.

I think I'm just going to set him up with a desktop with Mint 17.3 and a wireless connection. Then all of this will just be chalked up to another reason NOT to buy a an HP All-In_one inkjet printer.

Well folks I said I would do a follow up on this situation and here it is:

New box running Mint 17 with a Linksys Wireless 802.11g adapter installed. Mint found that immediately and allowed me to connect it to their home internet without any problem. However the printer STILL would not connect (or be seen) without installing HPLIP. Once that was properly installed and set up the computer was able to connect wirelessly and print to it. Originally the printer would only print grayscale but I was finally able to get it to print in color.

Even the built-in support (in Linux Mint 17) for HP ink jet printers wasn't there for this particular model.

So what I took from the user's manual of said printer even though it has support for USB, Ethernet & WiFi you CANNOT have all three enabled at the same time - at least not in this scenario.

The customer (friends of mine) are happy & I am also happy and I can now add "setting up a printer in Linux" to my experiences with Linux Mint 17.
