saving text document!

I went through the setup on my Mac after creating a new user profile and removing the old on.
During the setup there was an option to "encrypt" the computer and it generated a key for recovery.
I copied and pasted the recovery key to a new "Notes" but not familiar with Mac idiosyncrasies, or Notes, I accidentally backspaced and removed the last two digits? numbers? of the recovery key.
No problem (famous last words!) I'll just close the note and NOT save it when asked! UH-OH!
It just saved the not anyway! Hope I don't ever forget my password!
So this doesn't happen in future is there a setting/trick to getting a Mac to "ask before saving text documents?"
I searched the Help files to no avail. I will Google, but thought I would ask here first!

Notes arent like text documents, they are more like Evernote notes. They exist in a database and it syncs with the cloud, rather than individual files.

You can still manipulate text files using something like TextEdit, save as, move them around the file system etc.. as you would on Windows. Its just that "Notes" is like Evernote, not like a text file.

As for the key, maybe change the password and have it create a new recovery key?

If you did a copy-paste it would still be in the buffer unless you copied something else after.

Thanks @Bryce W I'll try this, although at the moment I'm only familiarising myself with it. I haven't stored anything on it yet so if I need to I can always start again.

Thanks @Markverhyden but I'd already closed and reopend the note, adding some other text
(copied and pasted) to see how it worked. It was then that I deleted the last 2 digits. I can remember one of them so it probably wouldn't be too hard to guess the last? Has to be 0-9 or A - Z? There are no lower case in he string.
Anyway, thanks but maybe it's not that big an issue 'cause I'm only playing with it at the moment.

Built in Text Edit is great. I've got it in the dock and use it almost exclusively for text docs. There is also CotEditor. Much more robust, kind of like Notepad +. I'll use that if I'm inspecting html, js, etc.

One little "niggle" I've discovered is that you cant copy and paste text between applications? Or am I not doing it right?

It's rare to not be able to copy and paste between apps. Not sure what you are doing. I do know some apps to not follow the Command + c, etc shortcuts. For example I use VueScan for scanning. It used to follow the Command + shortcuts for copying, pasting files names. But that went away for some reason. So in situations like that I'll control + click to pull up the options which always has copy, cut, and paste amongst other options.

I've never used that app. But when I launched it I clicked a field, then control + click and paste shows up so what is in the buffer will paste. You will see that there is no keyboard shortcut next to paste which is what I was trying to explain above.

Thanks @Markverhyden I didn't read the post properly. I understand now!
One other thing I just thought of. I am using the Bluetooth keyboard that came with the iMac, but I am using a standard USB mouse.
Does this change anything? If I use a "Mac" mouse will I get different left/right click options?

I didn't get the mouse when the guy gave me the Imac and keyboard! Apparently he was so frustrated with trying to figure it out (the imac) that he threw the mouse at the wall!

LOL!!! Apple has always had a one button OEM mouse so to speak. But third party mice were always able to utilize 2+ buttons for additional features. Personally, I think that because the original mouse designed by Engelbart had one button, that is why Apple stayed with the one button mouse. Of course the whole "gestures" thing in the last few years has made that a moot point.

We are all creatures of habit. So I have two button USB external mice and for my Apple laptops I just do the control + click thing.

On Apple OEM wireless KB and mice. This is another case of Apple's lack of detail for business environments, though it has gotten better in the last couple of years. It was not unusual in larger deployments using the wireless devices for the devices to "hop" to another iMac. Suddenly one user's devices stopped working on their machine, but someone 5 feet away would start typing on their wireless KB and it would show up on the other machine. LOL!!! Fortunately the Apple stores are great about this and they would readily switch them over to wired devices at no cost. I think recent versions of OS's are much better about binding BT addresses.

Funny you should mention that!
I was typing on the Bluetooth KB when I got a little "popup" telling me the batteries were low. I dismissed the message and kept typing but noticed that one of my Linux laptops, (which has a Bluetooth keyboard attached) started randomly opening windows (lol) for no reason!
I replaced the batteries and all has been well since?
I wonder if because the batteries were low that it could no longer hold the protocols?
