I'm the developper of SUMo - Software Updates Monitor.

SUMo notifies users when updates are available for their favorite software
It helps you in getting a quick overview of what is installed / outdated on a computer.
It notifies of updates but do NOT install upgrades automatically, so that you keep control on what's deployed on your systems.

Portable version available.

I'd be pleased to get some feedback from the experts from this forum, and to provide support if needed.

Can SUMo (the pro version perhaps) automatically update applications via a command line interface (i.e. run sumo.exe /auto) and have applications update without user intervention?

No, sorry. By design, SUMo only notifies of updates and ease finding of the update installer but i refuse to have SUMo automatically download any updates in order to keep full control to the user.

Have you tried SUMo already ?

I understand, but SUMo automatize most of the job :)
But you wouldn't be able to run it on a schedule or anything so you could only use this on machines you are in front of or connected too. It would be nice to have the option to script it to run and keep client machines updated for those that don't have a full RMM in place to do that.

I plan to release a SUMo supervision allowing you to monitor status of a set of remote SUMo's accross a network.
Would this fit your needs ?

Across a LAN only or would this work with WAN as well for monitoring my managed service clients? I don't actually have a need for this since I use n-able, but you might be on to something with the monitoring function. However, how would you install the updates? Let's say I had an office of 200 desktops and laptops, I would still need to go to each and install the software right? Because I wouldn't want to rely on end users to update their software.

Then i'll need to have the supervision module able to push updates in silent mode, with URLs sent by the supervision module

I'm just letting you know it in case you're not aware of problems with localization:
  • Main menu and the settings dialog aren't displayed properly for most languages.
  • Some other places are also affected, possible due to using ASCII strings instead of Unicode.
  • The Korean translation is broken.

You're right, this is due to Unicode not being supported.
ASCII languages should be OK... do you confirm main menu & settings troubles ?

I agree that Automation is what we are looking for. I've used this program only once, I switched over in favor of PatchMyPC. If there will be more updates I would be willing to give it a try again.

Your language support relies on user having their Windows configured to use the correct codepage for non-Unicode applications but it's not always the case. ASCII assigns characters for first 128 values(0..127) and the mapping of upper 128 values(128..255) is undefined. That means that only English is guaranteed to be displayed properly.

Even when the codepage is correct, block headers("Options", "Language", "Get Update") in the settings dialog aren't displayed properly.

EDIT: forgot "not".

How is Sumo any different/better than PSI (old SecuniaPSI), Crambis or Glary Utilities?
What stand out features does it have over these?
