Got the new ones in from the early bird store.

The "new and improved" Cloud Key Gen2 (UCK-G2) is roughly the same size as the original CK, just has more "heft". Has a power button that does a "safe shutdown", ETH interface, alternate power input, and a mini SD card slot for the backups much like the first gen model. Also has an LED readout on the other end. And on the back (or belly)...a connector called a "rack link" for a new 1U rack mount module.

This new model is supposed to have an improved storage system, enhanced by a battery backup to prevent "rude shutdowns" which plagued the first generation models by corrupted the database when used by people who were not aware of the need to gracefully shut it down before unplugging its power source. On the first gen models if you unplugged it from the POE switch or external power adapter, the "mongo database" had a high probability of becoming corrupted, and the CK would appear to be broken. It was usually easily fixed by a couple of different methods...but many people that never learned how to gracefully shut them down before transporting them or redoing things ended up frustrated when they wouldn't boot up the controller on the next power up.

And next is the new hybrid unit, the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus (UCK-G2-PLUS) which starts with the Cloud Key Gen2..and adds a 1TB HD with more CPU and RAM and a Unifi Video Controller for their security camera system. Same features on the back and front as the Gen2....but on its bottom in addition to the rack link connector there is a slide release button to pop out the 2.5" HDD sled so you can swap drives (upgrade, replace, etc). The bundled drive is a Toshiba biz class model. I'd prefer to see an enterprise grade model (5 year >1 million MTBF rating..but we'll likely be swapping with an SSD anyways. It's 48v for POE.

Both arrive in the fancy packaging which is typical of Ubiquitis products (thanks to it's roots in Apple), and the Plus model comes with a few decales for UniFi Protect...their new video software.

Absent were the micro sd cards such as those that came with the original first gen UCK...as well as the stubby stiff little 6" patch cords that we usually discarded and swapped out with a 1 footer.

It's "early access store" pricing, which may, or may not, reflect actual MSRP once it's officially released.
$179 for the G2
$199 for the G2 Plus

I'm a bit disappointed at the high price point for the G2. The first gen UCK was about 85 bucks, so in doing small Unifi setups (like a single USG, little US8 switch, one or two UAPs...made for affordable small setup for the hardware cost. This 179 is more than double. And you don't even get the microSD card!

Yeah, they are screwing this as a solution for the small installations it seems. Too bad. Thinking about buying a small stock of G1 keys while they are still available, but I don't know - it's just the way of things, I guess.

It's almost as if a tiny reliable Linux server designed to operate a database fueled piece of critical software costs something...

This sounds like another project we know of... but for some reason people keep thinking reality can shift.

Looks like the new keys I might actually use. I had far better luck using refurbished desktops with Windows on them before.

Yeah that is thoroughly confusing. $20 more for a full-size, with a 1TB HD and able to record video? Yeah. no one is going to buy the G2...

I'm also assuming that's American which means it will be more in Canadian.

I'll stick with either cloud hosted instances or refurb PC's. I can get a refurb for under $100.

The CloudKey Gen2 Plus doesn't use the Unifi Video Controller. It uses the new Unifi Protect software and the HDD can be field replace with up to a 5TB HDD.

For just $20 more than the CloudKey Gen2, the Plus is a good bargain.

I'm still a firm believer in cloud hosted controller but the new key for the new protect system looks cool

Yup it's the new and improved video software. I'm still calling it Unifi Video out of habit..and that's really all it is, just the next major release of it. I fired it up yesterday after taking those pics.

It's going to be more than just video. What they have so far is just the basic beginning and they said the video system is staying around for a while.

The prior Unifi video system will remain for quite a while and be getting updates. Right now there is no "upgrade" path for existing NVRs, but they plan on releasing an in-place upgrade. Else, right now they made the "migration" process easy, export settings from prior Unifi NVR, and import them into the new Unifi Protect NVR. Worked very well for me.

It still has some maturing to do. For example, a critical feature...no "motion only recording" yet.
