Hi, anybody know if I can use xp home cd to do a repair reinstall of xp media center editiion?

Jim,

Sionce you have, at least one time, threatened to "arrest" a poster asking a question, are you posting here as an official representative of the US Government?

I think it is important that we know.

My employment status with the Government is irrelevant in this situation and has nothing to do with answering this fellows question....or any other question.

But yes I do work for a Government Agency. That information is not really all that important to know....unless you are actually doing something Illegal via this site.

The individual who I mentioned possibly investigating was NOT asking a question...but answering one, and offering advice to as how to circumvent MS Product Keys and activation processes. This may shock you but that is indeed a crime and I am obligated to point that out and initiate an investigation if the situation warrants it.

I'm here to offer advice and assist anyone I can and NOT necessarily as an investigator,...but don't expect me to look the other way when I see a crime being committed or someone offer advice that could lead to legal troubles for a questioner.

To other Technibble members:

Am I the only one that has a HUGE problem with this?

WHY do some people just feel the need for senseless Internet drama? The fact that I freely acknowledge who and what I am should be a damn good indicator that I am not here to conduct covert investigations ....and your paranoia is unwarranted.

But I guess you also have a HUGE problem when a patrol car drives down your street and the cop sees someone breaking into your neighbors house and foils the crime...after all it's none of his business right?

Is there some special reason my presence/participation makes you so paranoid?

Personally I think he's full of ****, so no I don't.

Congratulations...Despite your incorrect evaluation of the situation, at least your not one for ignorant drama.....

I'm done.....

Is it against the law to use too many ellipsis or are with not worthy to be privy to the missing thoughts?

I don't know that I buy that he is works for the government nor do I care. I do what I can to be legal how ever there are situations that require a bending or flat breaking of the rules. I think perhaps he should do as much as possible if he does do what he claims to leave it at the office. I understand he may feel it is his duty but most of the people here only suggest things becuase while it may be a broken law on technicality it is too much red tape to go the proper method. This may infact require circumventing securities and may give knowledge that can be used for ill intent but much of what we say and do can be used outside its intended purpose. Im rambling and not sure where I was going or if anything made any sense.

Bureaucrats and technocrats leave common sense at the door. I think most of us have a proper sense of right and wrong and are only looking for reasonable equity.

As I told someone in a PM, the US seems to be the only country spending money and protecting these corporate parasites. I think this quote from the EU is worth remembering:

“Microsoft was the first company in fifty years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision", said European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes. "I hope that today's Decision closes a dark chapter in Microsoft's record of non-compliance with the Commission’s March 2004 Decision and that the principles confirmed by the Court of First Instance ruling of September 2007 will govern Microsoft's future conduct".

and our taxes go to "protect" them. Something is deadly, deadly wrong.

I don't think I understand why anyone would have a problem with another member pointing out obvious illegal activities. Members of this forum should not be recommending to other members how to do things illegally.

The only exception I would have to that is for the sole purpose of doing something legal. Sounds funny but having copies of XP that you do not own or took from a user's system so you can repair someone else's computer would fall under this.

Now if your disabling WGA on a user's system because it is acting up, even if it looks to be a legit copy, should not be done. I know someone right now who is having issues with WGA. Every 60 days or so (forgot the amount of time) he has to do a system restore to keep using Vista. I could fix it for him but he doesn't want to pay me.

Quite frankly, I find it odd that some people on here love to point out how a local company is selling illegal copies of XP on systems but then post tips on how to use LogMeIn Free for business use. I've listened to several podcasts that take 10 minutes to explain an elaborate method to get around this limitation, yet keep your client's information secure. Like they are somehow trying to protect themselves from legal issues. Or telling people to use Hiren's boot CD. etc.

If people on this forum are specifically pointing out how to do illegal activities, why would you care if someone points it out or reminds them that yes, it is in fact illegal?

LogMeIn places no restrictions on the use of their free service. It's perfectly valid to use it for business purposes. You can find the information on their site if you do some digging.

I agree, what's wrong with someone pointing out something is illegal, (threatning to arrest is another point) .

the way I see it is, one guy posts about a new relase of hiren, another guy screams " hey its illegal" and everythings ok. what's wrong with that.

I just wonder if jm would be nominated for homeland security chief, what info we would find out about him.

just ranting don't know where its going and not sire if it makes senese.

My apologies then. I didn't believe you and tried looking it up on the website, and I really couldn't find anything that would confirm or deny it except in a thread by a user where he comes to the conclusion that he could use it for commercial use, and the moderator didn't correct him. I am still confused on it's legal status but I am leaning towards to it being perfectly fine.

I am still confused about the intricate methods people come up with to limit access to these free accounts.

I'm certain you are referring to me and again, if you read the actual thread instead of just create strawmen arguments, you'd realize that you were wrong. Even if you were correct, which you are not, CERT has no authority to initiate any investigations into copyright infringement because that's not what CERT does.

Mr Boyd is not acting as an agent of the US government because he has no authority. He can't come out and say he's acting as an agent, because he knows he'd be in a world of **** if he did, so he is allowing it to be inferred through his signature and his vague language. If his supervisor were aware he were sitting here wasting time on the government dime, I'm certain he would be reprimanded, but that's neither here nor there. He has no more ability than any other member of Technibble to initiate investigations.
