Where the heck is the Ricoh scan software?

For a business scanner which many Fujitsu/Ricoh scanners are I think paid software is easily justified in fact as I mentioned before most instances I have seen them used it is to integrate scanning into a company wide business specific software suite. I haven't had to replace or work with one in several years but last time I did I needed to download from Fujitsu to avoid buying a license for Kofax VRS which if you think that VueScan is expensive just check out Kofax(which appears to be renamed when I google it). The scanners I have worked with in businesses are either cheap throw away from HP or Canon, Large MFP Copiers(leased/rented), or Business Scanners costing on the bottom end $800. The throw away I use the included software as it gets the job done. The large copiers are usually set to scan to email on a network and shoot PDF copies to the individual. The production scanners mentioned so far have all included a license for the Kofax VRS software and then tied into some existing company software for users to scan into where others can view and it can be tied to POs and likes or just in a massive indexed document image archive.

If your scanner somehow fits between the expensive units and the throw away units I think a $50 app is a decent price to pay if it provides the functions you need,

provides the functions you need,

Key phrase. I'm all about "tool to task," and when that's paid software, it will be acquired.

All of us are putting our presumed milieu surrounding the initial request. If I were in a situation where I needed scanning software that works with any scanner, and where said scanner may be being replaced on a frequent basis, then a 3rd party program makes a lot more sense than a manufacturer provided one. It limits scope of change in the workflow as a whole, which becomes a bigger and bigger plus the larger the organization and the higher the number of users.

My presumed milieu is "very small office." The requirements there allow for more change in scanner software and less probability that there's some automated workflow involved.

Been using Naps2 (free) scanning software with fujitsu and brother scanners with no issues. https://www.naps2.com/
Thanks for mentioning that. I was trying to recall the name of that. I know of it because one of my clients uses it. The production people on the night shift stick a piece of paper in the Brother all in one machine, then double-click an icon, the page is scanned and attached to an outgoing email that is preconfigured and addressed to certain manager. It's all done with a single command line command - the user just puts the page in, double clicks, clicks send on the email.
