I have an Asus Eee PC 900-w072x running windows XP home that after installing windows will boot into the install, load drivers, activate and update just fine, that is until I disconnect the USB CD/DVD-RW drive or take the Windows XP OEM disc out from the drive, then it will just sit at a blinking cursor after reboot.

I've removed the optical drive from boot and set the 16GB SSD as the first boot device in the BIOS. Installed Windows 3 times, using a different disc, & USB optical drive.

I can't think of anything else to try. Now I have the orginal support dvd with drivers and utlities but I'm using an OEM windows disc.

Anyone run into this before? Any Ideas on what else I can try?

If you can't boot without the xp cd being in you could boot to recovery console or a live cd and repair the master boot record....

It doesn't sound like an MBR error; the CD can read and kick off the boot just fine. It's sounds like it's a problem with the Logic Boards bootstrapper.

EDIT: ATTech your scary, Pulled the mini pci-e hard drive and found one of chips is physically broken. looks like it was defective out of the box. Odd symptom for a faulty drive Thanks
