I have a client that I did a restore of XP with updates. The system has a Nvidia video card. When Windows Update runs it installs an update for the Nvidia card, and when the computer restarts, it BSOD having the Nvidia driver being the cause. I went into Safe Mode and rolled back the driver and everything is ok. I have done this twice.

The question is, what do I need to do so the Windows Update does not keep trying to download this new driver?

Thanks

Step 1) I have learned that this is an issue over and over again. Although most of the time, windows will update the drivers with no issues. But due to the few errors I have seen such as this, I never allow windows to update my drivers.

What to do instead? Double check your hardware. Go direct to the manufacturer and download the latest drivers. Install them, reboot, and then check windows updates to see if the update is gone. If not, windows is mistaking your hardware for something else.

Step 2) So it is still showing up as an update!

Go to windows update and do a custom scan for updates. Under Hardware, Optional - click on the + sign to expand this driver update. Put a check mark in the "Do not show this update again" box.

same here. I have a problem with the sound card drivers from microsoft. I just uncheck it so it never installs.

just get them straight from Nvidia.

I have had this same issue happen so many times that I simply do not let windows update any hardware drivers. Its always good to get the right driver from the manufacturer if possible or driverguide if you can't find it.
